Esther Bubley (1921 – 1998) was an American photographer who specialized in expressive photos of ordinary people in everyday lives. These pictures were made for a various reasons: magazine assignments, documentary projects, advertisements, and family albums. I have known some of these children over long periods of time, others for only a few minutes. Regardless of how long I have known them, my way of photographing children (and other people) usually follows a certain pattern. All children like to have their pictures taken. Even tiny babies are fascinated with shiny lenses and flashing lights. Older children, while they enjoy posing, have unfortunately often been conditioned to stand still before a camera and smile into the lens. Thus, posing children is not a problem; getting them not to pose is. (via)
“A picture is worth a thousand words”—a phrase most of us have heard before. And for a reason. Photographs can capture loads of information in just a split second and immortalize it for years to come. By freezing moments, photographers enable us to travel to places and times we’ve never witnessed ourselves. They allow us to see the world exactly as it was, whether it was yesterday or a hundred years ago.

Images of life in inner city Manchester and Salford from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Some of the most powerful photographs are those that crack open our lives, cleaving our existence right down the middle and into a “before” and an “after.” Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson might have called the instant in which such an image is conceived a “decisive moment,” so it’s appropriate that more than sixty years later, Magnum is revisiting this theme by asking its photographers to select a single photo that “Changed Everything.” Scouring their archives, these artists paired their image with its backstory, illuminating the transformative currents that linger beneath each frame.
