The surprisingly beautiful Viola rotundifolia is the one of the first native perennials to bloom each spring at Distant Hill Gardens, hence one of its common names, 'Early Yellow Violet'. It is the only yellow violet with flowers and leaves on separate stalks,making it easy to identify. The round-leaved violet flower is only about 1/2 inch wide and high, so the beautiful detail of the cranberry lines on the interior is difficult to see with the naked eye. The camera changes all that. FYI - Like the native spring ephermeral Purple Trillium, and many other herbaceous plants of the eastern forests, the seeds of the Round-leaved Yellow Violet are dispersed by ants.
