The basement at this Northern Virginia home was cramped and dark due to a very small patio with a 6 foot retaining wall on all sides. Once the patio was demolished, the entire area was regraded, and this circular patio was installed. Additional stairs were built on either side, to give a pleasing flow from the front of the home to the back. While a large retaining wall was still necessary close to the house, the grading allowed a lower wall to be installed on the far edge of the patio, giving the entire space much more light.
