Good or bad, habits are part of who we are, what we do and who we become. We spend time trying to eliminate bad habits and an equal amount of energy in establishing good habits. And when it comes to language learning, things are no different. Ensuring that we have good study habits surrounding our…
This is a small unit I put together on independent living. You can do the lesson from the list, or print and cut the cards. In our morning groups, 2x a week, we do 5 cards (5 min on each card). I tell the kids to imagine they living in their own apartment or house (depending on the card). We first decide if it is an emergency or not then brainstorm what they would do. Most my kids want to call a professional immediately so we also discuss cost and then agree on what would be the best option. We also discuss the difference if they lived in an apartment or home (calling their landlord/maintenance or having to take care of it themselves). I also put together a Kahoot game we will do once we finish all 30 cards to see what they have retained. https://create.kahoot.it/?_ga=1.123717327.55684047.1486221503&deviceId=2f8be39b-1beb-43d7-b1db-97e450647e03R#quiz/f3362d0f-b6af-45ec-b1a6-5942bce9c705

I made the large meme down below some time ago and thought I'd share it here. What do you think? I would love to hear from you about the WHYs of your EX-believer status. I often feel such a sense of community with ex-believers. So many of us have experienced enough cognitive dissonance that we found it intolerable to stay in the church. As for me, the mind games and shame didn't sit well with me. I couldn't ignore them in the church when I was working so hard in my life at the time to be completely honest and healthy with my thinking. Making the decision to live a highly ethical life meant that my brain was in turmoil over my religious beliefs. The internal struggle for me began in earnest in the early 90s, I guess. I have always been a heavy reader and my reading at that time was deeply spiritual and widely religious and psychological. It didn't take long for the cognitive dissonance to set in. I tried to make it all work for so long. First I decided that it was religion in particular that I couldn't live with. I left the church but kept on with my belief, my reading, my thinking. The intellectual struggle kept me upset and in distress quite often in those days. How about you? Have you read any of Karen Armstrong's books? It might have been her book A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam that nailed the final nail in the coffin of religion for me. Not the final nail for a god, but for religion. The final nail for any belief of a supernatural being of any sort came to me while I was reading The Bible.

Kara Walker operates on the premise that when you make history truly visible, both your own and that of your people or nation, there exists a challenge to show all of it, the unholy mix, the conscious knowledge and the subconscious reaction, the traumatic history and the trauma it has created, the unprocessed and the unprocessable.

Thank you to Christine Hartweg, author of Amy Robsart: A Life and its End for writing this guest article on Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, for us today. Who was Amy Robsart? And what do we really know about her? And why? In 1559, the Imperial ambassador at Elizabeth I's court wrote that Robert Dudley, Elizabeth's great favourite, was "married to a beautiful wife" (but of course the ambassador had never seen her). We know for certain, on the other hand, that Amy Robsart was born on 7 June 1532 in Norfolk. Like her future husband, who was almost exactly the same age, she grew up in an "evangelical" (or Protestant) family. It is possible, even likely, that the marriage of Amy and Robert was a love match. They were married on 4 June 1550 in the presence of King Edward VI.

Overview: The five-paragraph essay is a helpful tool -- here are ideas for teaching it! Note: Contains referral links. In one of my articles about high school writing, I shared the story of when my eldest daughter took the ACT and got a poor score on the writing portion. I was flabbergasted at the time. I read the essay myself, and it didn't seem so horrible to me. She had great grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure -- what was their problem? I have since come to realize that the ACT (and SAT, for that matter) writing scorers are looking for a
