Science is really cool. There are so many amazing things in this world of ours. So many science experiments for kids that just make me stop and say, "whoa" ... or "wow" ... or "What the ...!!" (depending, of course, on my company). Children, as we know, are naturally curious. They naturally want to learn
Georgia O'Keeffe One of the most significant artists of the 20th century, Georgia O’Keeffe, the "Mother of American Modernism"(1887-1986) was devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called “the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it.” O'Keeffe lived and painted in her own way and on her own terms. She did every single thing she wanted to do, yet admits, not just to being afraid, but absolutely terrified every moment of her life, and she lived to be 99 years old! I appreciate that she shared her feeling of terror with us. This is strangely comforting, since although I can't seem to be content without adventure, fear seems to be inherent in every new adventure. But...I have learned something in my life, just as Georgia O'Keeffe did: Anything worth doing is bound to create a little fear. Joanne and I have carefully planned each mile of our cross-country trek, we researched every campground between Jacksonville and California. We've made long packing lists of every item essential to our happiness and comfort. We've discussed the difficulties we might run into and how we will handle them. Though we've planned so carefully, we aren't without anxiety. Let's not kid ourselves - it's a loooong way to California from Jacksonville, Florida and we'll be far from home for over a month. Despite the most careful planning, we're bound to encounter some surprises and misadventures. Everything I've done that I consider to be a worthy endeavor was scary as hell at some point. Have you found this to be true too? So we decided to re-label our feelings of fear and anxiety; we decided to call what we are feeling excitement and anticipation. One of our stops will be O'Keefe's studio and home in Obiquiui, New Mexico as well as the only museum dedicated to a woman artist, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. We hope that she would have been proud of us. We'll keep you posted on our adventures and misadventures. Let us hear about some of your anxiety-producing adventures. We leave in two weeks and we are so...EXCITED!

Traveling is really fun, I always look forward to visiting new places and experience new things. Our family loves to travel if time and budget permit but I guess traveling for work is not fun at all. It’s been more than a year that my husband travels a lot because of work and I am not really happy about it because he is always miles away from us. I am thankful before that he did not choose to be an OFW but now it seems that I have an OFW husband. Whenever people hear that my husband travels a lot, the initial reaction is “Wow, ang saya naman” or “Wow, ang suwerte naman ang dami napupuntahan”. If my husband is still young and single, maybe work traveling can be fun. But for someone who has a family, it is not amazing at all. The truth is a family trip is very different from a business trip. So I will share with you why travel for work is not fun at all, the way I see it. 1. Less Time for the Family Yes, this is the first reason why work travel is not enjoyable because you will be away from your family. Even there is a technology that connects you like video call, nothing beats the personal presence. If my husband has a business trip, most of the time he is not home either Saturday or Sunday because he needs to travel the day before or the day after his work schedule. Weekends = Family Day, but he is not with us so most of the time we just stayed at home when my husband is not at home. 2. Irregular Work Schedule If you will not travel for work, the regular working hours is 8-5PM except if you need to render overtime without pay or with pay if your company offers that. But if you have a business trip, you need to wake up as early as 12AM because as a general rule, you need to be at the airport 3 to 4 hours before your flight. Then sometimes you can’t sleep yet because you are waiting for your boarding time which is 12MN or 1AM. The worst-case scenario is you need to sleep at the airport because the next connecting flight is the following morning. You need to adjust to different time zones. It is not enjoyable to adjust your body clock. Sleeping and waking time is very much affected. 3. You Have No Time to Enjoy Work travels allow you to stay in luxury hotels but the problem is, you have no time to enjoy the amenities and facilities of the hotel. Most of the time you will just sleep and eat in your hotel because you are already tired. You tend to work longer hours if you are on a business trip because you need to finish your agenda. 4. You Miss Home Cooked Meals Yes, you can eat in the restaurant but the problem is, you are not sure if you will eat those foods. If you travel, expect that foods are not the same. Sometimes you will eat the same hotel breakfast food every single day. So when my husband is home, he eats a lot and missed my home-cooked meals even it is already our leftover food. Especially if he came from a non-pork eating country. 5. You Missed Important Occasion, Events and Holidays If you have a business trip, you can’t just say “No, I can’t go because it is my wife’s birthday, my son’s recognition or whatever reason you have”. So there are times that you will miss the important occasions, events and holidays. Yes, even holidays because you already booked the flight before the government announced that it was a special non-working holiday. I experienced that a lot of times like APEC and EDSA holiday. 6. You Cannot Just File Sick Leave Even you are not feeling well, you can’t just message your boss that you will file a sick leave. You have work to do that needs to be finished before you went back to your home country. It is not easy to buy over the counter medicine if you are overseas. Good thing my husband was able to buy medicine when he was in Thailand. Lesson learned, do not forget the medicine kit. Update: March 2020 7. You Can’t Say NO When You Need to GO Lastly, you cannot say no when you need to go because if you don’t travel, it means you are not doing your job. As of this writing, there is a coronavirus that greatly affected several countries around the world and because of this, there were canceled business trips. But it’s been two months already and there is still coronavirus. There are works that need to be done so my husband and other employees who need to travel for work have no choice but to travel despite the coronavirus health scare. Life must go on! Here are my 7 reasons why travel for work is not fun. Despite all of these reasons, my husband is not looking for a new job and he does not need to check out ORB for sales associate resumes. I have to admit that there are perks in traveling for work because you can visit different countries and places for free. You can stay in luxury hotels and try different foods. We can expect pasalubongs. Hehehe! But the bottom line is traveling for work is not as glamorous as it sounds.

Traveling for work doesn’t have to be all about business. The opportunity to travel for your company can offer many advantages. You get to visit new cities, and hopefully, try some new food on the company’s wallet. While traveling for work, consider exploring and having new experiences that you wouldn’t get at home. It can be difficult to manage fun when you’re on a tight work schedule, but it can be done. Check out this list for a few ideas on how to make the most of your work trip. 1. Stay close to the city center. Even if your client is in the middle of nowhere, consider booking your hotel near the larger city nearby. You will be closer to any sites you could see in the evening, along with closer to better restaurants. Since your free time likely revolves around food, stay near where your options are the best. 2. Drive by interesting sites, even if you don’t have time to stop by. Work trips often have packed itineraries. Even if you don’t have time to commit to stopping at a tourist attraction, consider planning your commute so that you at least drive by or see it. You might be able to stop for a quick photo before having to drive to your client or conference. 3. Ask your co-workers for recommendations. Check with your co-workers to see if anyone has been to that town before; they will likely offer some of the most popular recommendations for food and sites. If your co-workers have never been to a city before, consider asking your client or a coffee shop barista for the top places to visit. Locals are bound to have a few good options available. 4. Avoid chains restaurants. Dinner may be your only free time, so take advantage of it. Do not go to a restaurant that you can get at home and avoid going to a chain restaurant that you can easily get elsewhere. Visit unique local restaurants for a taste of what your new city has to offer. 5. Use your own credit card to maximize points. If your company allows it, do some research on the best travel credit cards to use to maximize the amount of points that you receive. You will accumulate points as you spend money on your business trip, which you will be able to redeem later for free flights or free hotel stays. Only consider a card with an airline or hotel if you know you will exclusively use that brand – otherwise, look for a more generic card to accumulate points on. 6. Keep your hotel room organized. When you are packing for your business trip, use packing cubes to keep your clothes in order. On my first night at the hotel, I like to iron my outfits for the week. I will also unpack my toiletries and lay out everything that I need for the week so that I do not need to think about hunting for things in the morning. Pack your suitcase the night before you leave, so you aren’t stressed on the morning of your travel day. 7. Extend your trip for the weekend. Many companies will allow you to extend your trip, as long as the flight does not cost extra and you are able to pay your way for the nights not required by your work trip. Consider flying out early or staying late. You could also fly out a friend or spouse to enjoy the new city with you. While traveling for work will be busy, you can still take advantage of being someplace new. Even though you will be tired, try not to spend too much time in your hotel. Between evening meals and site-seeing with your coworkers, there are many was to ensure that you experience as much as possible.
