Ballet Dancer Doing the Splits in Mid Air With One Arm Raised
This lovely old tree caught my eye driving along Lake Washington Boulevard near Leschi in Seattle. Dancing chains of delicate leaves contrasted beautifully with the gnarled split trunk at its base. Building convincing volume in those leaves and whip-thin branches while retaining the open, lacy appearance was a fun challenge. I always feel plein-air painting captures more truly the feeling of motion and life in subjects such as this willow, whose leaves were dancing in the wind throughout the several sessions it took to complete this work. This is an original oil painting created on location, with limited finishing detail added in the studio. It was painted on a stretched gessoed canvas, 8 x 8 inches. Plein-air paintings are created on location in the great outdoors. When our somewhat unpredictable Northwest weather allows, I find taking my easel into nature an extremely relaxing activity. There is an unlimited range of inspiring scenery within a day's drive of my home studio in Seattle, Washington. Painting landscapes on location helps me push my color-mixing technique and brushwork. Without a narrative to address, I can focus upon making the composition, colors and values of a painting come together within the limited daylight hours. The dry painting has been framed in a black wood floater frame with a German silver lip to showcase the entire work and finished canvas edges. Your framed work is wired and a hanger is provided if you wish to display it on the wall.
Details Conjuring a willow forest, Pepe Chavez captures the enchantment of the woods. Bright jewel tones fill the air with a sense of magic at the edge of a tiny Andean hamlet.
