We were wondering how we might illustrate the late centenarian ceramic artist Beatrice Wood’s extraordinary statement: “My life is full of mistakes. They’re like pebbles that make a good road” . Then we came upon the work of artist Richard Long, who for decades has made remarkable path works that seem to echo Wood’s words…

Based in Richmond, Virginia artist Morgan Herrin transforms the most humble material—laminated construction grade 2x4s—into spectacularly detailed figurative sculptures. His choice of imagery is surreal: a noble 15th century knight melts into a network of dripping stalagmites or a classical marble bust that is overgrown with parasitic sea creatures. The resulting works are a fascinating juxtaposition of material and subject matter that require up to a year of labor to produce. Of the untitled knight piece Herrin says: Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. More

Sculptor Tach Pollard (previously) works with sustainably sourced hawthorn wood to form lustrous sculptures of mythological figures. After carving the wood, the UK-based artist finishes it with blow torches to form the dark bodies that contrast with the pale, peaceful faces on each sculptural figure. Pollard draws inspiration from myths and spiritual traditions from around the world, including Inuit and Celtic traditions, and is particularly drawn to the notions of shapeshifting and sea creatures. In recent months, Ariele Alasko's work has become even more sculptural: chubby, U-shaped brushes; thick, bleached squiggles; chain-linked chunks of cherry.
Everyone has their own understanding of how a house should look. Some feel the coziest in a small dwelling next to the woods while others dream about owning a big property with a basketball court next to a lake.
By using a simple yet effective design twist, the Flow Wall Desk transforms itself from a piece of art on the wall, into a functional desk by showing off its unique aesthetics. The Flow Wall Desk acknowledges the potential of creating a desk inside one’s indoor environment. Only with one twist, it becomes a true joy to have as a separate working area. It can be subscribed as a piece of functional art that builds on Robert van Embricqs his Design track record of transformations in space. This one offers a part of the interior that shifts with time: a cozy workspace during the day becomes a compact wall hanging after being used. Van Embricqs was inspired by recent global events, and the longer-term trends that precede them, to devise a statement piece that lends dignity to the digital workspace through craft, warm textures, and durably engineered fastenings. The Flow Wall Desk is adaptable to any wall and can be used throughout homes, libraries, hotels, and many other inside locations. It creates the opportunity for a temporary work surface in a sunny corner and becomes an ergonomically adjustable desk in a compact city interior which invites the user to fold that desk away when work is over. When it comes to functionality, each part of the Flow Wall desk has been specifically engineered without losing the appeal to attract, just like a folding magic trick with a well-kept secret.

Sometimes a Journey song can wax poetic. “Small town girl…lonely world.” We’ve heard it before. But for whatever reason, it’s the song I can’t get out of my head while I’m sitting with Jenny Woods in a small, Persian restaurant in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Standing a towering five-foot-nothing and with a demeanor that couldn’t ruffle a sleeping kitten, Jenny, or Bunny

Italian sculptor Aron Demetz (cousin of Gehard Demetz, whose work we featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 22) creates wood sculptures that appear distressed, burnt and scarred. The process of working with wood is a fundamental part of Demetz's aesthetic — instead of presenting polished and perfected works, Demetz celebrates the wood's textures and its transformation through various natural processes. The simplified, abstracted human figures can seem like personifications of the wood itself. Demetz is currently exhibiting new works at Gazelli Art House in London through June 5 along with Korean artist Shan Hur for their two-person show, "The Tainted." Take a look at some images of Demetz's sculptures after the jump, images courtesy of the artist.

A self-taught sculptor, Romain Langlois studied medical books and anatomical charts to understand the human body, building his first sculptures using only plaster and clay. Seeking a more permanent material, Langlois turned to bronze, a metal he now incorporates into works that are inspired by nature rather than man. His pieces visually pull apart the natural objects that surround us—building works that appear as bisected rocks, boulders, and tree trunks. These sculptures showcase glistening bronze protruding from their insides, unleashing the perceived inner energy of each object. More
