My last workshop for the year was for my good friend Alice in Dayton, Ohio. I taught my Altered Texture Class. I was amazed at the wonderful results. Many of my friends who attend our 'Workt by Hand' workshop were in the class. We used many new fibers making unique flowers adding texture and dimension to each piece. We also used many different stitches to add texture around the edges. This covered button was a really fun idea for the center of a flower. Some also used antique fabrics to made a fun flower base. Also different fabrics and stitches were used to embellish leaves. I love these variegated threads that change color when you stitch. They do the work for you! Here is the bullion stitch and fly stitch using different threads. I also love the layering of fabrics on this leaf to add dimension. One of my favorite fabrics to applique with are our hand dyed silk velvets dyed by my sister Wendy. We have 38 colors on the website to choose from. www.suespargo.com. They add a luxurious texture when appliqued on wool. Many of the students had fun making wonderful stems. Some used mini pom pom ribbons, wool with stitches over them, velvet rick rack and patterned ribbons. I always get so excited to see what my students come up with. I get many new ideas to work into my own designs. I am so looking forward to starting new projects in 2010. I wish my fingers could stitch as quickly as my mind works! We have had such a mild fall here in North East Ohio but I think this week things are about to change. They are predicting a large winter storm here later this week so I can't wait to curl up in my chair and stitch. This is my favorite thing to do! Take care Sue
When it comes to wool appliqué, the McCall's Quilting and Quiltmaker teams are experts, and they're here to share their words of wisdom!
Their have been inquiries as to my state of well being.......I am happy to report that I'm just fine. I really have not meant to abandon you....I've just been spinning my wheels a bit! The Bits and Bobs Facebook group was way more eagerly accepted than I ever imagined. I can see that I'd better be organized and thinking and planning ahead. The January project with the Heart Table Mat kits I made, have disappeared, and I had made bunches, more than I expected to sell, thinking I'd have a few extra to sell off my web site. Not so! I'm patiently waiting for another bolt of the plaid background fabric so that I can mail the rest of the orders. Please do not lose patience with us. I say us because my faithful side kick is also involved in this endeavor. This is January project.....a Heart Table Mat. I have off centered this picture and do not know how to fix it.....I've been making some progress on my slow stitching project, and I have enjoyed working on this quilt. This picture is a bit fuzzy, but maybe the other pictures will give you a better look at it. By the way my quilt holder is back at his post! :-) I love this house block. I have plans for a smaller project using this block. Working ahead for Bits and Bobs. This will be February's project. I've loved this quote by Abraham Lincoln and decided to incorporate it into this picture. I have tea dyed osnaburg for the background. I had the picture under glass, but took it out because of the glare for photography. "Where there is love and inspiration I don't think you can go wrong." -Ella Fitzgerald
Here we are, the end of May already! I want to start out with photos of our project this month. One can never have to many pincushions. :) This pincushion uses the Peach Blossom flower from week 17. Remember, you can see all the flowers and all the projects by clicking the tab at the top of my blog. I also brought back Mr. Bee this month. He is attached to the pincushion and will hold your embroidery scissors. So I guess you can call him a "Bee Keeper!" Hee,hee, hee, get it? I'm such a dork. Those friends who are members in The Fellowship of the Flowers, will be receiving their instructions via email today. Of course, if you aren't already a member, the bunnies and I would love for you to join us! Please click on the Fellowship of the Flowers tab above to find out how to join us. Now onto the flower for this our 22nd week. This flower will be used in our October project. I'm having lots of fun using the baby rick rack. You can purchase it many crafts stores. I'm also going to be ordering some to carry in my shop. The bunnies and I are doing some celebrating back here on Friday. Be sure and hop back for a visit. There will even be a giveaway! We also want to send out a big Happy Birthday to David! My honey bunny is 54 today. :) xx, Michelle and the Bunnies

hi friends,the fourth row is finished,have a nice week,susi
Appliqué is simply a method where one piece of fabric is layered on top of another. Felt appliqué simply uses felt for this fabric layering. If you have some embroidery experience and are curious about trying felt appliqué, it is a very accessible craft which is lots of fun! In this article I will b
In July, Kara shared The Story of an Inspiring Jacket with you. Today, I (Teri) will show you what we have each done with the design created from that jacket. These projects have been such fun, and we hope to share the joy with you. We are excited to teach this class at Primitive Homespuns Wool & Needleworks in October, in Frederick, MD. When we first met Kathy, the owner of the shop, she asked if we could design a wool appliqué piece that could be used to top a wooden box. Kara had already started working on this pattern in bright colors by Shakerwood Woolens, and we took it in to show to her. Kathy thought that the design would be perfect, so I selected a palette of colors from her shop to stitch my model. As I love warm colors, my model has a very different look from Kara's. Our two examples show how the same pattern, with the same embroidery stitches, can look so very different! Here are a few side-by-side detail shots for you to compare. Sometimes a different look is achieved because of different thread choices, or even because of the density and weave of the wool. The purple wool on the outer petal of the above flower, left, held the scalloped cut. The teal, on the right, however, was a looser weave, so I chose to fray it with the back of my needle, so it would look more feathery. For our class at Primitive Homespuns, we will be using the warmer palette and making a lovely box that would be perfect for storing sewing supplies, threads, or even used as a project box for appliqué or embroidery pieces. I went to the shop yesterday to work with Kathy to secure the finished piece on the top of the box, which she had painted a lovely brick red. First, I backed the finished piece with muslin, using SoftFuse Premium™ as my fusible. Then I trimmed it to size, and we backed it with Shurtape® double-sided carpet tape. Kathy has this process down to an art; I was impressed watching her trim the tape to the size of the appliqué, and methodically remove one strip of backing paper at a time to carefully secure it to the box with proper placement. We auditioned several examples of trim, including discussing a blanket stitch around the edge of the block, but we settled on a lovely vintage chenille yarn, which we glued down using Aleene's® Original Tacky Glue®. The color matched the pale yellow used in the block and gave it a nice, finished look without distracting the eye from the design. While I was stitching up my model, I put a photo of my embroidery on a Facebook group and was astonished by the number of requests there were for the pattern. So we decided that it only made sense to write up directions and create a formal pattern. We have been working hard to get it ready, and it should be up on our website by October. But in the meantime, if you live in the Frederick area of Maryland, come join us for some Saturday fun! (For more information about the class, please check our website, by clicking here.) We thought it would be fun to put our two projects together for a photo session; here they are sitting on a chair together in the shop. You can see that Kara decided to stitch hers into a pillow, and she just happened to have the perfect fabric to match her appliqué! What would we do without such an extensive fabric stash?! Marcia's Flowers
Hi ya! This week the daisy is returning. Here's how it looked before I stitched it (good gracious that photo is washed out). I must say it's been challenging (in a fun way) to come up with different ideas to stitch 50 flowers. Remember, you can join us anytime before December 20th. After that date, the patterns for the flowers, the bee and all 12 projects will no longer be available. However, the photos of the finished flowers will remain on my blog to inspire you. Just a little shout out to my local friends. This Friday, July 11, I will be in downtown New Bern at Ballantyne Framing on Craven Street. The owners, Mary Kay and Marianne invited me to be their featured artist for Art Walk. I will be there from 5-8 with all the pieces from my book and some extras. I will be signing books should you wish to purchase a copy. Ok, have a fun rest of your week and happy stitching! Oh and don't forget the sale on Valdani 3 strand floss. Colors are going fast so don't miss out! xx, Michelle and the Bunnies
I have been delaying this post because we have new website…and we are working through some issues and we appreciate all of you who are encountering them and working with us through them……
