Een paar weken geleden liet iemand het me op Instagram weten: er was een nieuwe wolwinkel in Utrecht open en moest ik daar niet eens even langs? Mijn oortjes gingen overeind staan. Een nieuwe wolwinkel in Utrecht? Wat een geweldig nieuws, want die kon de stad eigenlijk wel gebruiken en dus liep ik afgelopen weekend even langs bij Sticks & Cups, wat een fijne wolwinkel. A couple of weeks ago someone tagged me on Instagram. There was a new yarn shop in Utrecht, and had I visited it yet? My heart skipped a beat. A brand new yarn shop? In my own little Utrecht! Now that's wonderful news, as it's really what the city needed I think. And that's why I visited this brand new yarn shop Sticks & Cups last weekend. The big opening of this store will take part on October 1st, but until then the doors are wide open, the yarns are stashed up hight and outside there are some comfy benches to crochet or nit on, or have some coffee. There used to be a vintage shop in this historical shop in Utrecht and the venue is just amazing. A must-go if you ever visit Utrecht. As soon as you walk into the store you'll get a very warm welcome from the owner Lili, who fled Iran when she was 4 years old to come to The Netherlands with her parents. She is passionate about everything yarn and her enthusiasm is very catching. She loves knitting, crocheting and spinning. Lili emphasises on yarn originated from The Netherlands, so you'll find lots of Scheepjes yarns and hand dyed yarn by Dutch indie dyers at Sticks & Cups, as well as a whole collection of Lopi yarns. Lili is hoping to have the back of the store completely filled with indie yarns soon. I was immediately attracted to cupboard with Scheepjes Stonewashed, but the fine flittery yarn was also amazingly beautiful. Hopefully I'll be able to make the grand opening on October 1st. Lily also told me that she'll organise knit ins, on Thursday nights after the big opening and I think that's so clever. We don't have anything similar in town and I do feel Utrecht needs this. Hopefully I'll be able to join the knit ins often, and Lily won't mind me crocheting instead of knitting. Hi all, A few short weeks ago I took the boy to Berlin for his birthday. It was a bit of a big one ('30') and I had spent a long time trying to figure out what might be his perfect holiday location with the following things I know and love about my boy: weird food, good beer, meat, Lego, action, zombies, comfy beds... you get the picture. Anywho, Berlin catered pretty well for all of these, and after a few flights to get there (sadly no longer flying direct from Newcastle!) we arrived and had an awesome 3 nights and 4 days there! Berlin is a fantastic city, and the week before Christmas it was cold but beautiful, lit up with lots of Christmassy lights and hot gluhwein! Not an alterior motive, just taking advantage of our time in Berlin, we did a little bit of crafty shopping. I say 'we', he very generously allowed me to go have a little wander around the local area looking for a wool shop I'd seen mentioned in a magazine. So, finally getting to the point of today's blog post, to help out anyone else who is looking for some crafting fun times on a trip to Berlin. This is by no means everything, just what we managed to find! We were staying at the fantastical Michelberger Hotel, on the East side of Berlin, near the East Side Gallery - very much recommended for all who enjoy a good ol' hipster hotel! These were my three favourite little places we found: Fabric shop on Simon Dach Strasse, nearest Metro Warschauer St. This was an awesome little shop - only very small but crammed with lovely patterned fabric of the kind I never see in craft shops near me, but am convinced would be incredibly popular! Lots of sweet animals and various different crazy images. There were also some lovely English speaking staff who had a long chat with me about how difficult it is to find good fabric containing images of dancing pink sparkly rabbits... Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The shop was fairly small so no inside photos, but scroll down to see some of the lovely fabric I got, especially love the polar bears! Shop front 2. Wollen, nearest metro Warschauer St. This is the place I had read about and had gone to find when found the fabric shop, and many other fun things in between. It was pretty awesome, with a lovely range of wool in vibrant colours, which is what I always struggle to find. Very cool little shop, they also seem to run knitting classes, although being there such a short time and with a birthday boy, not really the order of the day. Bought some beautiful extra fine merino wool to make in to a very special gift for a very special friend. Not to be revealed for another 5 and a bit months... Loved the tree! Difficult to see here but there was a wool wrapped cord on the light, very hip. 3. Bead shop Tukadu, nearest Metro was Hackescher Markt. We found this place while following a trip advisor walking tour of graffiti and public art starting in Hackesher Markt via the trip advisor app - it worked very well and we saw some things I'd never seen before, and took us to the best gallery we have been to in ages! Anyway, the bead shop was all kinds of awesome, again the kind of place I would love to live round the corner from. Everything arranged by colour, lots of different kinds of beads, sizes and styles so we were more than a bit overwhelmed. I ended up buying some blue and gold beads, inspired by how they were layed out in the shop and looking fantastic. The only thing that was a bit lacking was chains to make your jewellery with, and the woman running the place wasn't that helpful, but I still had lots of fun! My little haul, the only thing that I bought that hasn't yet been 'actioned', anad is sitting beside me now! There you go, I've been fairly restrained with pictures, as we had many, many, many photos of the rest of the holiday, and so here are a sneaky two crafty related pictures before I say goodbye! Goodbye! Ali xx

We're beginning our yarn store tour with a picturesque shop nestled in the little mountain town of Ojai, California. Cattywampus Crafts was founded by Anna and Kirk Nozaki, shortly after the couple moved to the small town to raise their adorable daughter, Naomi. Instantly inspired by Ojai's creative community, they wanted to make their own special contribution to benefit the town. Both designers, one with the knitting bug, they decided to open a yarn shop.
Like me, my friend, Ellen, is a yarn-lover. And an all-around crafty-chick. So, when it came time for Ellen to visit New York City for the very first time, I knew I needed to include the best yarn shops in Manhattan on our tour. I admit it: this isn't a guide that hits every yarn

while up in vermont i had to make time to stop into (admittedly in paint-covered pants) one of my favorite shops in burlington: nido a perfectly edited fabric + yarn shop right downtown. the exposed brick warm winter sun streaming in the tall windows antique cabinets and wooden crates bursting with a rainbow of organic yarns favorite projects hung to inspire anna, denise, nani oh, my! and the icing on the cake- picture-perfect vignettes featuring japanese goodies and the best in crafting books it's like a little purl in the great green mountain state!
Drops Nepal is a lovely, and luxurious yarn spun in 35% superfine alpaca and 65% Peruvian Highland wool, a mix that accentuates the softness of alpaca while the wool contributes to the garments’ shape stability. Both fibers are untreated, which means that they are only washed and not exposed to any chemical treatment prior to the dyeing. This highlights the fibers’ natural properties, providing also a better shape and texture qualities. Spun from 3 strands, which gives an exciting and rustic stitch definition, Drops Nepal is an easily knitted/crocheted quality which is also ideal for felting, resulting in garments that have an even and soft surface. Drops Nepal contains mixed colours, this means the wool is manufactured by carding the colours together before spinning, which gives it a mixed effect. 50g / 75mNeedles : US8/ 5mmGauge 17 sts x 22 rows = 10 cm Several free knitting patterns designed with Puna Drops Yarn are available on the GarnStudio.com website. Yesterday I wrangled two of my good friends into my car and took a little day trip out of the city and into the wilds East of Lake Washington. After about a 45 minute drive we arrived in Duvall and had breakfast at the Grange Cafe. This place is delicious. The coffee was tasty and appropriately strong and there were plenty of vegetarian options - my veggies benedict was cooked to perfection and served on a homemade biscuit. Yum! After lingering over our breakfast we made the short drive to Carnation (about 15 minutes South) to attend the Grand Opening of a new yarn store - Tolt Yarn and Wool. There was quite a crowd! I think the owner and employees were a little overwhelmed but they were cheerful and smiling and happy to see so many people make the trip. The store is open and airy (well, it would be open and airy on a normal business day) and smells like freshly cut wood and sheepy wool. In a word, heavenly. The fixtures holding yarn were beautiful and inventive. I was particularly taken with this old p.o. box unit. Those are tiny balls of Rowan Fine Tweed. There were tons of samples throughout the store. This is a Lopi sweater displayed next to Lopi and Peace Fleece yarns. The store is thoughtfully curated with basics like Cascade Yarns and Malabrigo interspersed with interesting and harder to find yarns like Jill Draper, Sweet Fiber, and Spincycle. I came away with some Imperial Stock Ranch Tracie Too in Navy Blue and a heavy duty Tolt mug for my morning coffee. The line to check out was looooong but the little bag of swag they snuck into my bag of purchases and the opportunity to knit while in line made it worthwhile. I'll definitely go back soon!
Tolt is now stocking Jamieson's Shetland Heather Aran `and Jamieson's Spindrift.
One must always visit yarn stores while on the road.
