I picked up Womb Awakening: Initiatory Wisdom from the Creatrix of All Life by Azra Bertrand M.D. and Seren Bertrand out of curiosity, first because I am a woman, and second because I am a mom and I am three months pregnant now, but I never expected to find such wisdom and spiritual truths in this book. I feel different after reading this book, as though I am connected to a primordial, creative power. It’s the first book I have read with allusions to the womb of God. In this book, the authors resurrect mysteries and teachings of the womb that have been lost to history, helping the humanity of the reader to reconnect with the fecundity that precedes all life. According to the authors, and drawing inspiration from ancient teachings on the womb, there is a feminine cosmology of creation that has guided life for ages and each individual has a blueprint of the womb connecting them to the greater mystery of life. With mythical stories and entertaining tales from all ages — including those from Christianity and other traditions — the authors weave a stunning message about the creative power of the womb and propose road maps for womb awakening. This book features wisdom from ancient sources and uses legends of the Holy Grail and personalities like Mary Magdalene to underscore powerful points. In this book, readers will understand the connection between the sacred womb consciousness and lunar energy, find tools to activate the creative power of the womb, and allow it to transform their lives, and master the alchemy of rebirth. There are some books that are easy to describe, but there are some that are just so good we find no words for description, and Womb Awakening is one of the latter. It’s so filled with wisdom and light that the reader has to experience it themselves. Although I am not a keenly spiritual person, the message of this book awakened something in me and now I want to find out what it is. I always finish interesting books within a day, but it took me two weeks to finish this one because I had to savor every bit of it. One reads the book, puts it on the shelf, and yet continues to feel as though they were steeped in a refreshing spiritual river. Azra Bertrand, M.D. and Seren Bertrand seem to have invested a lot of time researching this work and the simplicity with which they communicate the message is astounding. The images and artwork, plus the illustrations, are very telling and symbolic. The book features a love letter in the opening pages that readers have to read, even if that is all they read in this book. This is a gift to receive with gratitude and then pass on. The pilgrimage into the womb will unveil deeper levels of life and love for those of you who dare.

Warm and breezy, It's About Luke by Gwenyth Snow is a biographical fiction story that examines the reality of family, love, friendship, and humanity. Set in Edmonton, the story follows an ordinary young boy, nine-year-old Luke Poole, whose life vacillates between the doldrums of everyday life and the excitement of the fringe world of his disabled, elder brother. The two brothers do exciting and wild things, some with unexpected consequences. Luke doesn’t feel that close to his mother, often feeling pushed aside and neglected as his mom stays focused on putting her life together. But everything changes when tragedy hits home. Now, young Luke has a powerful revelation of his worth and a deep sense of family. Love, family, and adventure are among the themes woven into this mesmerizing narrative. It’s a fun read that is full of love and tears. The writing is beautiful, filled with insightful passages and emotionally charged moments. I was moved and hooked by the first lines of the story, lines that promised a tale full of warmth and love, but that hinted at the theme of solitude: “No one should be too old for the comfort and security of a stuffed animal, even when no longer a child.” Gwenyth Snow allows readers to plunge into the depths of the psychology of the characters and the author demonstrates a keen understanding of the world of children. It's About Luke is a tale that will remind readers of the child they once were, of the fears and dreams that inhabited their hearts. It's deeply moving and permeated with a fine sense of humanity. I loved every bit of this story.

A splendid blend of social issues, family drama, and women's fiction, Bedside Manners by Heather Frimmer is a tightly woven story that explores the relationship between mother and daughter and how tragedy can change the way we approach both work and life. Marnie Novak is looking forward to completing medical school, getting married, and embracing the future with hope. But then everything changes when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Joyce finds herself in a situation that isn’t comfortable, not only because of the painful procedures she undergoes but also because she can’t be in control as has always been the case. While Joyce struggles with accepting her new reality, her daughter experiences an epiphany when tragedy hits one of the patients under her care — life can be so infinitely fragile that the consciousness of how precarious it is becomes the seed of the journey towards finding meaning. Heather Frimmer writes a story that pulls readers right into the hearts of her characters, evoking empathy and compelling readers on a journey towards compassion. This is a novel that teaches readers how our plans can’t always be what we have dreamed and that when things fall apart, it is the bond that binds one heart to another that defines meaning. The pacing isn’t too fast but steady and the prose is delightful to read. This author shows an unusual understanding of the rhythm of a woman’s heart and the seasons of her soul, exploring emotions that can be complex, yet doing so with confident clarity. Bedside Manners is a narrative about learning to accept one’s fragility and a daughter’s journey towards compassion. A delightful read, indeed!

Broken and Beautiful by Elizabeth Courtright is an emotionally intense, intelligently plotted, and masterfully written story in the genre of contemporary romance. Written in an absorbing first person, this story takes readers on a high emotional tide, exploring the dynamics of relationships between two couples. Readers are introduced to their fears and hopes, to the power of the friendship that keeps them going, and the tragedy that challenges everything they ever knew about friendship and love. Casey and Kyle are in a relationship and so are Aster and Matt, but they have been friends for a long time. However, their relationships are going through a period of emotional turmoil and when tragedy strikes, they have to make choices that will change everything. It’s for the reader to find out what happens and how these characters navigate life. Things I loved about this book? A lot. A lot more than I can say in a short review. I was hooked from the very first page, hooked by the beauty of the opening, a pithy dialogue in which one of the characters promises to propose. From then on, it’s a strong and rollicking ride and I enjoyed the psychological and emotional depth of the characters, the insightful and fluid writing, and the realism that comes through the narrative. The conflict is strong enough to push the plot ahead and the pacing is just right to keep readers turning the pages. Readers will be enticed by the drama, delighted at the great writing, and enjoy the familiar voice behind the story. Elizabeth Courtright knows how to explore places and emotions most of us have experienced and Broken and Beautiful provides a wonderful escape for fans of contemporary romance. This is a story with great lessons for readers.
The classic heirloom bean that inspired the birth of Rancho Gordo. Suggestions of chocolate and coffee make this pinto-family rarity one of our favorite and most requested beans. This is the bean that started the whole thing! Steve was eating a bowl of simply cooked Rio Zapes and they blew his mind. He remembers: "The flavor was reminiscent of Pintos but there was so much more going on. I could detect traces of coffee and chocolate and the velvety texture was like nothing else. I was sold on heirloom varieties after just one bite." In 1935, Rio Zape beans (also known as Hopi String beans), were found in the Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings of the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico. Then, in the 1960s, archaeologists found them in the excavation of a sealed tomb in Rio Zape, Durango, Mexico. It's believed that the beans were sealed in the tomb around 600 AD. A beautiful bean with a mysterious history!

Glossolalia is the opening book in the Agents of the Nevermind series by Tantra Bensko, a psychological thriller narrated around very complex themes, great conflict, and unforgettable characters. It’s a world where nothing is what it seems, with dubious programs created by governments and organizations to control the people, and hide their sinister esoteric and criminal activities while growing their wealth and power. However, one woman dares to expose the devious duplicity of the powers that be. Read on to discover the powerful psyche of Nancy and what happens when it collides with the dark forces of organized crime. Here is a book that has a lot to provide the elements readers seek in thrillers — psychological depth, phenomenal conflict, intense action, suspense, and powerful themes. Tantra Bensko plunges readers into a political conspiracy bigger than anything they’d imagine in books of this nature. Government mind control programs come across in the story in a startling way and they are at the heart of the conflict. Join the cast of compelling characters as they engage in secret rooms, jittery sex moments, chases, and psychological battles. I enjoyed the protagonist, a courageous woman who follows her instincts and who takes the risk to develop and use her gift to unveil the truth, but can she really withstand a confrontation with the dirty truth and deadly agents? Glossolalia is deftly written and well balanced, with a powerful political, historical, and physical setting. The writing is excellent and readers will be lost in the vivid and engaging descriptions of both scenes and settings, as well as the insightful passages. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading.
Thandi's Love by Angel Strong is set in the deep South in the 1800s, in the Lexington plantation. When the narrative opens, Tom Lexington, a slave owner who still preserves his humanity and treats his slaves with some decency, is thankful to God for a good harvest. But his marriage is in tatters. He is married to Anna, the vile daughter of his business partner, Daniel Stafford. As the harvest is bountiful, Tom has Thandi and her brother Isaac on loan from his aunt to help in the harvest. The two mulatto siblings have grown up with Tom. Their arrival at the plantation is about to change things. It starts with the preferential and brotherly treatment Tom gives them, and then the connection that quickly develops between Tom and Thandi. It is not long before things get out of hand, with Anna becoming mean. Will Tom remain steadfast with a newly discovered love or be won over by the conventions of the time? The love between Tom and Thandi faces new challenges, but the worst is still to come with very dark secrets about to surface. Thandi’s Love is well written in language that is beautiful and a style that is evocative of a historic era characterized by man’s inhumanity to man. In this environment, forbidden love burgeons and blossoms and readers want to see what happens with the lovers. Angel Strong’s characters are well-developed and the themes of love, friendship, and slavery are so masterly handled that readers feel the realism and humanity infused in the story. I fell in love with Tom Lexington, a slave master who is different from the others, but a man whose humanity is put to a difficult test.
Are You Being Set Up To Fail? by Jillion R Rising is a slim but relevant book that explores one of the common experiences of millions of people in America — and elsewhere: the tragic sense of failure. In this book the author identifies a feeling that is becoming a belief for most people, the thought that they are destined to fail and that nothing they try ever succeeds. The book answers the difficult question: Why? Why do most people feel like they can’t amount to anything? In clear and powerful prose, the author examines the political and social systems that nurture this feeling in readers, and shows clearly how the media subtly communicates a message of hopelessness to the masses. The author then offers a road map to a liberating journey that allows readers to regain their inner freedom, reconnect with their core personal values, and redefine success on their terms. This book will empower people, especially parents, to identify the media junk that leads people to feel helpless, helping them understand how corrupt politics and the advertising industry can impact negatively on the lives of individuals. The author looks critically at the misleading voices of the media, how information overload can create stressors, the connection between our mental thought processes and the quality of life we live, the moral dilemma of sin, and a lot more. Jillion R Rising’s book is a wonderful gift for this generation, a message of hope, and one that empowers readers to take their destiny in their own hands, to take full responsibility for their lives. The writing is confident and the author comes across as an authority on the subject. In fact, this is one of those books that will help readers understand the social conditioning that they are being subjected to, and to find ways of liberating themselves and creating the life they want. Are You Being Set Up To Fail? is a book to read and pass on.
I was hooked immediately when I read the opening lines introducing Banister - The New World: An Early American Adventure by Kent Courtney: “I would be honored to tell you the story of my family’s history and our trip to the Americas — the New World. It was an incredible time — incredible loss, incredible grief, and eventually incredible reward.” Set in the 18th century, this is an epic story of what it took to be in the New World and to enjoy its promise, leaving everything behind and being on the turbulent seas for months. Meet the Irish-English couple, Elizabeth and James. They are young and the future is filled with promise, but it is quite different from what they expected when they boarded the Spanish ship and set out for the American colonies. Join them in this adventure and feel their pain of loss, their uncertainty, and their hopes as they seek greener pastures amidst turbulent times. Kent Courtney is a terrific writer and he has imagined a setting that will have readers mesmerized, a setting that features the changing times in American history, with King George's War, and the early periods of the French and the Indian Wars. It is interesting to imagine what it was like relocating to another country in those times when communication wasn’t as advanced as it is today, and when a journey that could be made today in hours could take months then. The characters are wonderful and the plot is beautifully paced. Banister - The New World: An Early American Adventure is every bit as entertaining as it is interesting, with wonderful historical references, great themes, and awesome, just awesome characters. This book will transport readers into a historic period that is interesting to revisit.
London for Immigrant Suckers: So Long Yugoslavia by Kolya S is Peter Kovach’s exceptional odyssey as an immigrant in the UK, a story that features powerful historical experiences and references. While sharing the story of Peter, his hardships and the many challenges he has to face as an immigrant while struggling to come to terms with the social and political reality back home, this story explores the last stages and the disintegration of Yugoslavia and looks at that piece of history through the eyes of a humorous character. There is no way readers won’t feel connected with the protagonist as they follow him in his efforts to find a job, in his multiple relationships over the years, and his immigration issues. The narrative voice is something like I have never heard before — jovial and humorous — and the entire story is written in a style that breaks the rules of English grammar in many ways. But it is fun. It is something that doesn’t feel like the author’s fault, but a reflection of the narrator’s unique way of saying things — even when the voice addresses readers directly. I knew I’d love this story when I read the first line: “Until a few years ago, Peter Kovach thought that he was among the coolest male specimens available on the market.” It was intriguing and begged me to find out why this man thought so highly of himself and what happened so that he dropped that thinking a few years ago. Kolya S has created a beautiful story and a great character, and I enjoyed the way immigrant issues are handled in the story. London for Immigrant Suckers: So Long Yugoslavia combines humor with originality to give one of the best entertainments readers could have.

The simplicity of the writing is a telling truth that the author is confident and very comfortable in talking about risk management, and the reader immediately feels assured that he or she is listening to an expert. Hellfire and Handbaskets: A Time Traveler's Journey by Kathryn Hills is a stimulating mix of romance and time travel, with an interesting focus on the emotional development of the characters. Rick Hauser is an ER doctor who suffers from PTSD. He has been a combat medic and has seen the worst of humanity’s misery — so he thinks! But when Amelia Pennington, a blue-eyed, charming woman walks in and asks for his help, her beauty gets the better of him. Rick doesn’t know then that Amelia Pennington had always wanted to be a doctor, but it seemed like society, including her mother, had conspired to make that dream impossible. She is a medical student running from a crazy man, running from the oppressive society of Boston, 1895, thanks to the rune stones that allow her to travel through time. While Rick would rather have nothing to do with a woman at this time, he can’t ignore it when he finds Amelia again sleeping on a doorstep. The attraction between the two is strong. But can Amelia leave her life back in 1895 in Boston and will Rick risk everything for this mysterious woman? Kathryn Hills has crafted a spellbinding romance with characters that are rich and believable. Amelia’s background is well explored and it is one of the elements that make the conflict strong. She comes from a family that has many problems, including the illness that afflicted her mother, and an evil man determined to make her life a living hell. Rick is a genuinely flawed character, a man haunted by his past and a character that readers feel sympathy for. The plot is cunningly done and the prose delightful. It is interesting how the language changes, even the dialogues in the 1895 setting. The pacing is fast, and the emotional aspect of the conflict is strong enough to keep readers utterly engaged. Hellfire and Handbaskets: A Time Traveler's Journey is a great achievement and literary entertainment that will certainly delight many fans of time travel and romance stories.
