Manufacturer/Model: Zeiss West Germany Dialyt 7X42 B/GA T*P ClassiC Field of View: 8.6 deg = 149 m/1,000 m; APFOV 60.2 deg Weight: 800 gr Exit Pupil: 6 mm Serial #/Year of Manufacture: 572257 = 1992 Notes: The Zeiss Dialyt 7X42 B/GA T* was made from 1981 until 2004 when the Victory FL line of binoculars was introduced. The P version with phase coating was introduced in 1988, and sometime later (early 1990’s?) Zeiss named the model the “ClassiC”. It’s not known what, if any, differences there are between the ClassiC and earlier versions. Possibly the ClassiC has upgraded anti-reflective coatings. Also, at some time after 1988 the IPD plate was eliminated which may characterize the ClassiC. The 8X56 Dialyt B/GA T*P ClassiC appears externally identical to the 7X42 except for its large objective barrels and is still being made today. (See 1. www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/6575565919/in/photostream and 2. www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/5968640302/in/photostream) Although discontinued, the 7X42 remains a popular model and if in good condition with phase coatings can re-sell at a price close to that of a new Zeiss Dialyt 8X56 ClassiC. The Zeiss Dialyt 7X42 and 8X56 B/GA T* P binoculars are derived from the Abbe-Koenig prismed Hensoldt Dialyt line of binoculars which Hensoldt discontinued in 1963 but which Zeiss (having majority control of Hensoldt) continued to manufacture under their own name until 1968. (See: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/5270186804/in/set-72157623... ). Although many of today’s roof prism binoculars have a Schmidt-Pechan prism which needs mirroring to achieve total internal light reflection, the Zeiss 7X42 and 8X56 Dialyts use an Abbe-Koenig prism which internally reflects all light as does a Porro I prism and consequently does not need mirroring. This gives the binocular its reputation for a very bright image, and, as well, the length of the Abbe-Koenig prism accounts for its distinctive long shape. Optically, this binocular is arguably the best 7X in the collection. I took the plunge and acquired it because its big sister 8X56 (non-phase coated) is one of my favorites. Comparing the two, the 7X42 has a noticeably wider field of view, and its image shows slightly better detail probably because of improved contrast due to the P coating. It’s also over 200 grams lighter and much shorter. The long barrels on the 8X56, though, are very nice to hold and point and the extra 1X in magnification is appreciated, and even though the 7X42 surpasses the 8X56 in some regards, the 8X is still going to see a lot of use. The stray light control of both these binoculars is exceptionally good. Two excellent reviews of this binocular can be found at: 1) www.holgermerlitz.de/swaro7x42.html and 2) www.betterviewdesired.com/Old-Reliables-Full-Sized-and-8x... . Ernst Abbe, (born January 23, 1840, Eisenach, Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach [now Germany]—died January 14, 1905, Jena, Germany), physicist whose theoretical and technical innovations in optical theory led to great improvements in microscope design (such as the use of a condenser to provide strong, even illumination, introduced in 1870) and clearer understanding of magnification limits. In 1873 he discovered the optical formula now called the Abbe sine condition, one of the requirements that a lens must satisfy if it is to form a sharp image, free from the blurring or distortion caused by coma and spherical aberration. Manufacturer/Model: Zeiss West Germany Dialyt 8X56 B/GA T* Field of View: Estimated 6.3 deg = 110 m/1,000 m; APFOV 50.4 deg Weight: 1029 gr Exit Pupil: 7 mm Serial #/Year of Manufacture: 1910359 = 1985 Notes: The 8X56 B/GA Dialyt (B=suitable for eyeglass wearers and GA=rubber armoured) was introduced by Zeiss West Germany in 1968 and in 1978 was upgraded with T*anti-reflective multi-coatings. Phase coating was added about 1988, and the model remains in production to this day named “The ClassiC”. Usually phase coated versions have a red P* marking on the hinge end cap, but it is reported that early examples may not be so marked only having had a label on its box to indicate phase coating. A 7X42 B/GAT*P was also made but was discontinued in 2004. Since the binocular uses an Abbe-Koenig roof prism, mirroring of the prism is not required for total light reflection. The model is based on the Abbe-Koenig prismed Hensoldt Dialyt line of binoculars which Hensoldt discontinued in 1963 but which Zeiss (having majority control of Hensoldt) continued to manufacture under their own name until 1968. For information about Hensoldt roof prism binoculars go to: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/5270186804/in/set-72157623... . The build quality of the binocular is extremely high. Even though this example is over 20 years old the central focus and diopter adjustments function perfectly, and it remains immaculately clean inside. The rubber eyecups are in excellent condition but for an eyeglass wearer I don’t know how much folding down they will take before starting to crack. For non-eyeglass wearers the eyecups’ soft and thin rims are most comfortable to use. Unlike its predecessor, the Hensoldt Nacht Dialyt 8X56, it is fairly heavy (about 300 grams heavier) and not quite as comfortable to carry. It seems more robust, however, and is designed to withstand rough usage. This example although manufactured about the time phase coating was introduced is not phase coated. I was able to discover this by donning a pair of Avatar type 3D glasses and pointing the ocular end of the binocular at an LCD display such as a computer screen and then looking though the objective end while slowly rotating the binocular. If it’s not phase coated, you’ll see the two halves of the roof prism alternate from a clear to a darkened image during rotation; if it’s phase coated the two halves will maintain a fairly consistent shimmering usually red/green color. For an informative discussion about testing for phase coating go to: birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=164208&highlight=phase... . Optically, the binocular shows excellent resolution and contrast and the lack of phase coating is hardly evident to me if at all. Brightness and color are both extremely good. It has the best stray light control of any binocular in the collection. It is a little better than the Nikon 8X32 SE's and on par with the Nippon Kogaku 7X50 Tropical's. Sharpness to the edge is better than average. August 13/11 Update: I recently tested this binocular’s low light performance against that of a Nikon 8X32 SE and Swarovski SLC 8X30WB. I expected both the 8X30’s to outperform the circa 1985-88 Zeiss in spite of their smaller exit pupils because of the Zeiss’ lack of phase coating and older generation multi-layer anti-reflective coatings. However, the Zeiss surprised with its view showing noticeably more detail than the Swarovski and being very close to that of the Nikon although the Nikon’s may have been ever so slightly better. November 20/11 Update: I don't have any binocular I can say is my favorite, but this one is somewhere in the top ten. Optically it may not quite be my top binocular but it's still one of the best. On a day-to-day basis I have come to use it more than any other: it's reasonably weatherproof; low-light performance is terrific so I use it hunting in a blind or when fishing; but most of all, I find it just exceptionally pleasing to hold and look through and often take it on daily walks.
