ZOO ANIMALS - Who am I? - Game
One of the best places we visited over the summer has been the zoo so we wanted to continue our favorite theme as we head back to school! We started off our zoo unit learning a simple and fun chant! It definitely had us answering the call of the wild! We played a zoo sight word game! ZOO Patterns! This is such a great way to introduce patterns. We used dot markers and our zoo counters. Going on a Zoo Hunt! To get started, I hid the zoo animals around the house. Then, after my little one found them all, we each chose our favorite. Stand tall! We practiced the letters in our name by making a giraffe name craft. I love crafts that incorporate learning! We are Wild for Zoo Colors! First, we traced our color words and then we colored in the zoo animals. It was such a fun zoo activity and it was a great way to strengthen our fine motor skills. We built elephants by using our unifix cubes. We loved this hands on math activity! Tongues out! One of our favorite activities during this zoo unit was learning about giraffes. Did you know that their tongues are purple? We thought it was so amazing that we wanted to turn our own tongues purple! Trunkin' it up with an elephant craft! We made the head with a paper plate. This was such a cute elephant craft. One center this week was color elephants. We rolled the dice and then we graphed the matching color elephant! We painted the letter "Z" white and black to make zebra crafts. Counting zebra stripes! We identified numbers and then counted the corresponding amount with black stripes. It's feeding time! We made zoo cookies for snack. Some people use peanut butter, but we decided to use chocolate frosting. After we ate our cookies, we were ready for more fun at the zoo! Zoo Matching! We made this activity into a fun matching game. First, we matched the cards together. Then, we matched them to our zoo animal toys! My little guy loves handprint art! One trick to getting the perfect handprint is not to use a lot of paint. Another tip-practice on a separate sheet of paper. More monkey business! "Underneath the monkey tree" is the perfect zoo poem for preschoolers. Banana Tree Number craft! This was a fun preschool math activity that had us working on our number recognition and counting skills. Monkey see, monkey do! We used this Monkey Coloring Page to reinforce our sight words. Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! We made these simple lion mask to wear all day. Fur or feathers? We sorted our zoo animal toys! Alligator Life Cycle! We have been having a blast this week learning all about zoo animals. To go with our theme, I wanted to create an alligator life cycle craft. Zoo animals come in all shapes in sizes! We tried a simple zoo animal shape matching activity. Later, gator! We ended our Zoorific week with an alligator shape craft. What is your favorite zoo animal? These activities can all be found in my Zoo pack which you can get here!

This week I am on Spring Break! Finally!! It felt like it would never come! I absolutely love my job more than anything, but we have been so busy lately! I am just excited to have time to chill and catch up on some things. I spent my first day off by doing a little shopping! :) Since I get to stay up as late as I want I whipped up a Freebie for you! Our last field trip will be to the Greenville Zoo in May. I will be working on making a Zoo Unit, but until it is completed I will leave you with this. This freebie contains 2 write the room activities. Students read the word that is on the picture and then record the word on the recording sheet. The first two sets of cards do not include any words so that you can add your own words that you would like. The second set of cards include words that you may use if you would like. And these are the recording sheets. You can download this activity in my store for free by clicking here. While you're there please don't forget to leave feedback and also follow me to stay updated of future freebies!

See my favorite syllable activities for preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten students in this post. Learning to count syllables is a vital skill and will help students with phonological awareness skills. Phonological awareness is an umbrella term that includes the four skills: word awareness, syllable awareness, rhyming awareness, first sound awareness, and phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating the individual sounds in words). Syllable games are a fun way for students to develop a strong phonological awareness by chunking syllables (parts in words). Students will practice syllable segmenting and counting syllables.

At the end of Kindergarten every year, we always take our students to the Pittsburgh Zoo as final field trip. It is so much fun for the students and the adults! I am so excited to continue to use this unit and get the students even MORE excited about the trip!! The "We're Going to the Zoo" pack includes centers, readers, games and even things to use for the field trip! We're Going to the Zoo Pack! The first center included in the pack is a Zoo Animals Syllable Sort Center. In this center, students will clap out the syllables of the different zoo animals and sort them into the various enclosures. However, the animals in the enclosures will not make real-life sense to be together, but only because they have the same amount of syllables! There is also a follow up worksheet for early finishers. The follow up worksheet directs students to cut and glue the zoo animals to the correct number of syllables! The syllables sort center is sold separately through the link below. Zoo Animals Syllable Sort The second center within the Zoo Pack is the Zoo Animals Teen Ten Frame Game! In this center, students can read the teen ten frame and then sort between if the ten frame is true or false. Some examples of the teen ten frames are shown below. There is also a follow up worksheet for early finishers. The follow up worksheet directs students to fill in different teen ten frames! The Zoo Animals Teen Ten Frame Game is sold separately through the link below! Zoo Animals Teen Ten Frame Game One of my favorite books to read for the zoo is "Animal Strike at the Zoo! It's True!" The book definitely has some silly components and is perfect for the Kindergarten age level, which is why I incorporated it into the zoo pack! The Story Extension activities include graphic organizers for text-to-self connections, predictions and sequencing the story! The craftivity is for the kiddos to make zoo animal puppets! The "Animal Strike at the Zoo! It's True!" extension activities are sold separately through the link below. Animal Strike at the Zoo! It's True! Extension Activities The animals included to make the puppets are: elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, monkey, panda, penguin and zebra! Before you go on your trip to the zoo, there's also an emergent reader for the students to read that will teach them unique facts about certain animals from the zoo: elephant, giraffe, hippo, kangaroo, lion, monkey, panda, peacock, penguin and zebra. The students enjoy the title of the book "Zookeeper in training" as if when they go to the zoo, they are masters of the zoo animals! This text can be challenging for Kindergarten, however, I still have them search for sight words that they know as we read it together. They love to learn the fun facts and they're even more excited when they see those animals at the zoo and shout out the facts! After reading and learning all the new facts about the different animals, they love wearing the Zookeeper in Training name tags! The front looks like the picture below and the back has slots for teacher's name, school name, address, phone number and chaperone information. Students can work together as a class to tally their favorite zoo animal to see as a class at the zoo. The "We Are Going to the Zoo!!" roll and color game offers a fun independent or paired activity! Finally, after the zoo field trip, you can use the following days to create a "My Zoo Field Trip Memory Book" to allow students to write about their favorite and most memorable parts at the zoo!
These zoo activities for preschoolers are hands-on and engaging ways to teach literacy, math, dramatic play, and more!
Zoo Week in our Summer Survival Guide was so much fun! Here are all the post you need to plan your own Zoo Week. Each week of summer has a different theme.
I have a simple cut and past number matching activity that is perfect for preschool and kindergarten early number lessons - find it at the bottom of this post. But first... I wanted to share with you some additions to some of our growing bundles. Today I added a zoo themed reader and write the room. I also made a zoo themed 'Let's Write' writing prompt. These are all available individually, however if you have the bundles - you can access them in your existing download link! I am thrilled to finally scratch 'update plant log' from my to-do list. I have been wanting to do this for about a year and am so pleased with how the freshen-up panned out. Your students can participate in an in-class science experiment to watch their own seed grow. I suggest planting them on cotton in a clear plastic cup so they can observe and record the development of the plant. Their observational recording book is shaped like a cup - they will draw in exactly what they see each day! And speaking of plants growing - let's talk ice-cream building. Because they're related. I finished a fun new resource this week that has been brewing for a little while. My first graders LOVE changing one letter in a word to make a new one. We start off with one word and write a big long chain of words on the board as they all suggest ideas. It tends to keep going. And going. And going. Even hours later, they are still suggesting a word that will go next. It's the small things. 'Build It Up: cvc Ice Creams' will help your students record such learning. This packet covers cvc words, and I have started another for more challenging words. Students trace each word, snip the scoops and then glue them in place. Too easy. And kinda cute. Speaking of glue. I know - too true...... It's 'Cut and Glue Hullabaloo'! This new packet has been in the works for a few months. I have added a page or two each day. It is a nice simple resource full of practical cut-and-paste reversion worksheets. I like activities like these for fast finishers and table work. The procedure for completing them is very straight-forward and students will not get into a pickle working on them independently. This first edition covers a range of basic kindergarten skills in a 'matching' format. You can try one for free today! Find it in Google Drive: Addition Cat paste Worksheet Thank you so much for stopping by - have a wonderful day!
