The advent of the now nearly ubiquitous smartphone is slowly making watches and clocks obsolete, which is a crying shame because these both have a long and rich legacy of beautiful decoration and artistic craftsmanship. These 24 watches, whether homages to the grand-master clock makers of old or innovative new designs for the modern era, seek to keep our love of watches and timepieces alive.
As we've told you before, Cartier is making a concerted and highly credible push into the realm of high-end watchmaking, and over the past few years, has become a true force. Today, we are happy to announce an entirely new watch for Cartier, the Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, made entirely in-house. Wait, does that mean Cartier has made a new in-house chronograph movement? They have, and we'll tell you more about it after the jump.
Most Monochrome readers know Kari Voutilainen and of where he stands in the spectrum of watchmakers and brands all together. Exactly... somewhere near the summit. I was more than surprised to see Kari latest venture, a collaboration with one of the greatest the Japanese lacquer studios, Unryuan, which is under the guidance of mister T. Kitamura. Both men can be considered the pinnacle in their respective fields of work and a collaboration between these two men brings something more than the sum of both. One and one is three? Well, just have a look at how incredibly stunning the dial, created by the Unryuan studios, is. The dial features lacquering, using Saiei Maki-e and Somata Zaiku techniques, which takes several months of work to complete.
Arrr! Here be space pirates and where there are space pirates there is need of a $230,000 mechanical watch. Wild watch makers MB&F have just announced their MB&F HM6, a watch based on a 1970s cartoon called Capitaine Flam (Captain Flame). The bulbous watch is built of titanium alloy and you can tell the time […]

If you’ve ever wondered what the world’s thinnest wristwatch might look like, this is it. The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra is a Swiss Made mechanical that measures in at 1.80mm thick. Housed in a 40mm sandblasted titanium case, it is powered by the brand’s BVL Calibre 180 movement. Limited edition of 10 pieces.
The Midnight Planétarium is an incredible feat of engineering, design and artistic craftsmanship. Besides showing the time, this watch also accurately displays the movement of 6 planets in our solar system as they orbit the Sun. The watch took 396 pieces and 3 whole years of work to complete so, along with the precious stones dotting its surface, the $245,000 price tag comes as no surprise. However, one can always dream!

If one thing is certain about SIHH, it’s that it foreshadows Basel. And storming out of the gate for Pre-Basel 2015 is Blancpain’s new Villeret Grand Date. This watch is notable for a few reasons. There is a clever simplicity in applying the Aqualung’s (spotted here on Vladimir Putin’s wrist) signature date window to the Villeret. But, regardless of how clever and simple it may seem, applying such a window has the potential to go horribly wrong. Thankfully, Blancpain seems to have gotten it right.
The Brown Safe Manufacturing company released a premium watch safe line called the Chronos Series which features an abundance of carbon fiber.
Ask many vintage watch lovers about what the holy grail wristwatch is (as a reference, not an individual watch) and more times than not, you're likely to hear the reply: twenty-four ninety-nine. Indeed, the 2499, Patek's second perpetual calendar chronograph, has taken on somewhat mythical place in the world of collecting. It seems as though the large vintage perpetual chronograph made for over 35 years, but in just 349 examples, is on the tip of everyone's tongue this auction season – one sits on the cover of two out of the four major auction house catalogs. In total, five, yes five, 2499s will be sold during the spring auction week in early May. This begs the question – is now the best time in the world to buy a 2499? Or is it the worst?
It starts with pencil and paper, just as it has for centuries. A talented hand sketches the lines that will one day become a living, breathing timepiece. WatchTime visited Jaeger-LeCoultre in Le Sentier to explore the creative process that culminated in the latest addition to the brand’s Hybris Mec

The Fob watch, designed by Seiko, was given as a gift to the people of Melbourne. The watch has a twelve and a half metre, two tonne chain, which was taken down during the centre's refurbishment and has since not been re-attached. Every hour, on the hour, a marionette display drops down from the bottom of the watch with galahs, cockatoos and two minstrels performing Waltzing Matilda, under the watchful gaze of some koalas.
This is the story of a daily-wear watch: the Tsunami by Japanese independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka. It’s not a “beater” as it’s too beautifully made for that description, and some folks justifiably take offense at characterizing a five-figure expenditure in those terms. But it is a watch that GaryG suspects that he will be wearing a lot and in a variety of settings.
This is big, big news.
On the occasion of the BaselWorld 2015 exhibition, the house of Blancpain launched a new masterpiece in its Villaret series – the Shakudō....
We just finished dinner here in Geneva, where Patek Philippe revealed its latest and greatest (seriously, it's a new take on Patek's most complicated wristwatch ever). Tonight, in the private salon above Patek's downtown Geneva boutique, we were shown the Sky Moon Tourbillon Reference 6002. While the technical differences between this Sky Moon and the original (reference 5002) are not extensive, they are there, and where this new reference shines is in its case and dial work.

I first heard of Urban Jürgensen in 2014 when the watch company's Central Seconds (Ref. 1142 C CS RG) won the GPHG Men’s Watch Prize. At Baselworld earlier this year, I took a closer look at Urban Jürgensen's watches and vowed I would devote more time in order to become better acquainted with this h

Breguet No. 160 generated two of the greatest mysteries in watchmaking: who ordered it, and who stole it? Commissioned by an unknown admirer of Marie-Antoinette in 1783 as a gift for the queen, it was not completed until 1827, 34 years after her death. In 1983 it was stolen from a Jerusalem museum i
