These guys like tropical and subtropical climates. They get bigger than most other eagles. This particular one, a male, weighs about 10 pounds. He's a growing boy, and already dwarfs your typical American bald eagle national icon thing. He swallows rats whole at feeding time. That's the keeper's forearm he's sitting on with those BIG ASS talons. These guys were practically extinct but they've been bred and released into the wild, and now they're making a comeback. L.A. A blasting jeer comes from a blue jay in the big oak. Smaller birds scatter, except for a downy woodpecker, who freezes motionless on a tree trunk. A sharp-shinned hawk glides silently into my yard. It settles on a branch, watching for some small bird it can seize. It might have caught one, except that the blue jay ratted it out. The blue jay may only have meant to warn other jays, but all the other birds understood perfectly. The feeders are suddenly bare, and the downy woodpecker that did not fly holds so still that it’s almost invisible. I

This bird is called the black-throated bushtit, and no, we're not making it up. Also known as the black-throated tit, the beautiful fellow is only about 10.5 centimeters (4 inches) small and 4-9 grams (0.14-0.317 ounces) light.
