Why is it that some people fill us with joy and energy while others leave us feeling totally drained? How come we walk into one building and feel a sense of calm and peace while another will have u…

Highest position in Explore: 24. Built between 1898 and 1930 as a sanatorium for lung diseases, Beelitz-Heilstätten was one of the largest hospitals in and around Berlin. It served as a field hospital in the two world wars and was later the Soviets' major military hospital in East Germany. Abandoned in 1994 with the Russian withdrawal, most buildings have slowly fallen into ruins since. What a shame. HDR from 5 exposures, tonemapped with Photomatix.

Earlier this week, I wrote about the exhaustion and resentment that occurs when people find themselves in situations without infrastructures of care — for childcare, for eldercare, for any sort of care that ends up falling squarely on one person, with little or no relief.

This photography by Claudia Garcia-Mauriño really struck a chord with me, in this series her search for simplicity and harmony has been matched well with the Japanese culture.
Introduction A small concrete chapel built by local farmers on the edge of a field. Concrete is cast around a group of 120 tree trunks, cut at a local forest, and then slowly burned. The meticulous arrangement of the trees teardrop or leaf created the oculus that provides the only direct light to the small […]

View Large and On Black Taken this morning on the Carse of Stirling at one of my favourite trees... hard work though, the light was very white and harsh so i had to employ a Lee 0.9 hard grad and a sunset grad to balance the shot... i like the frost on the foreground and the overall balance... and they said photography was easy...lol

Belgian artist Cindy Wright creates realistic paintings using traditional techniques though her subject is rather unusual. Death, decay and raw flesh are motifs of her choice. Her still lifes are presented to us without context or an explanation, while her morbid subjects exemplify the physicality of flesh. In this way, her work continues the Northern […]
Hello Lovlies It's Summer you know what that means, late nights and early mornings. My best friend Natasha is coming down from the UK and we will be in Cape Town for a weekend in Jan, so looking forward to that. Otherwise my holiday plans are working, late night beach dips, braai's, sand boarding, road tripping with my boy and ice-cream and pigging out to my hearts content. Happy Holidays. God Bless. - Silver Dreams

Fixated on a mythological depiction of nature, Japanese artist Ishibashi Yui sculpts feral children that appear to belong to another realm of reality. Pallid, hairless human bodies become fused with roots and vines, brought to life through a mixture of wood, resin, clay, wire and paint. Oftentimes, the figures appear imprisoned by the flora. In Then, It Returns Slowly, a pregnant woman's face erupts with flesh-colored growths that form a tree trunk. The character in Dream of 10 Billion Years succumbs to a similar fate as her limbs are fused with a chair and her head becomes a bouquet-like arrangement of leaves and branches. These sculptures personify nature as a force that reclaims its power from its human occupants. Take a look at some of Yui's sculptures after the jump.
