In the first months after we moved to Copenhagen, Iain encouraged me to watch my first Studio Ghibli movie: Kiki's Delivery Service.
I’ve loved reading since I was a child. I thoroughly enjoy getting lost in a book, encountering a new world, learning new facts, or discovering a life story! As a child, my favorite books were The Boxcar children and the Grandma’s Attic series. My current favorites are memoirs and biographies. If I had a day completely to myself, I’d read all day long. That’s not something that happens very often (or ever), but I can still find a few minutes to read each day. I’m usually always reading 2-4 books at the same time. I have one book by my bed that I read before bed or when I can’t sleep. I keep a book in the car to read if I’m waiting in line or have a few minutes in between appointments. I keep a couple of books in the living room and read before the kids wake up, when Luke is napping, or in the evening. I have a book in my workbag and read if I have 5-10 minutes in between meetings. Here are thoughts on each of the books I’m currently reading or have recently finished: Help Club for moms, The Wise Woman Know – If […]

The Symptoms: I don’t answer when spoken to Dinner is late or nonexistent The house is a mess and I don’t even realize it And oh yah, was I supposed to be somewhere? The Cause: An un-put-down-able book For me, an un-put-down-able book is one where the story grips me from the very beginning. It will have relatable characters, strong plot lines and will either expose me to something new or make me look at something in a new way. Each of the following books had those qualities. They were not all easy reads, but they weren’t dense either. They were simply well told stories that made me feel something, which is what all good books should do! I hope that you love them as much as I do! Here are 8 books that I just couldn’t put down: A Woman is No Man by Etam Ruf My favorite book of 2019 so far, this story is about a Palestinian immigrant, Isra, who moves to Brooklyn, New York after her arranged marriage to Adam. About How to Hug a Porcupine Innovative and refreshing strategies for how to love, understand, and communicate with difficult people—at home, at work, and in your community Most of us know someone who, for whatever reason, always seems to cause problems, irritate others, or incite conflict. Often, these people are a part of our daily lives. The truth is that these troublemakers haven’t necessarily asked to be this way. Sometimes we need to learn new approaches to deal with people who are harder to get along with or love. How to Hug a Porcupine explains that making peace with others isn’t as tough or terrible as we think it is—especially when you can use an adorable animal analogy and apply it to real-life problems. Whether you want to calm the quills of parents, children, siblings, or strangers, How to Hug a Porcupine provides useful tips for your encounters with “prickly” people, such as: • Three easy ways to end an argument • How to spot the porcupine in others • How to spot the porcupine in ourselves With a foreword by noted psychotherapist Dr. Debbie Ellis, widow of Dr. Albert Ellis, How to Hug a Porcupine is a truly special book.
