This plump little planter will add tons of personality to your plantings and arrangements. The bulbous basin sits atop a circular pedestal bottom, ready to be filled with small succulents or a handful of cut flowers. The opening extends all the way through the base, and the cinched middle gives stability to flower stems. The interior of the basin and the exterior of the bottom pedestal are glazed for a glossy finish that's watertight, while the exterior of the basin remains delightfully unfinished. Another perk of that footed design? Excess water drains into the lower part of the pot, leaving the ideal amount of moisture for your philodendron or fern. Chicago-based designer Yuting Chang has conceived of a way to build the traditional blue and white pigments often found on porcelain into the very structure of her ceramics. Through slip casting, a process in which the artist can switch between colors within the mold, Chang is able to incorporate up to 29 alternately pigmented layers that are visible on cut surfaces. Rather than use a glaze to add different shades once the basic shape of her mugs and saucers are complete, Chang’s pieces only show their colors on the rims and edges, revealing the interior. More
