I love it when readers ask me for help with vintage outfits. One recent request was ideas for 1940s casual outfits. I have seen this topic come up a few times in some groups I follow as well. "Casual" and "vintage" usually do not belong in the same sentence. What was casual or informal in

(Picture source: http://glamourdaze.blogspot.com) Of course Alla kvinnors bok doesn't just tell you what clothes to wear, it talks about shoes as well. It begin that with lamenting that Swedish woken has so much bigger feet than the French and the Italian and also that we live in a climate with plenty of both rain and snow-a all things that makes it difficult to be both well-shod and find beautiful shoes. I can't agree that larger feet are unprettier than smaller ones, but I really agree that the climate may make it hard to find the both practical and pretty. However, never buy shoes just because they look nice- the most important part is that they fit. (Picture source: http://sheepandchick.blogspot.com/) Spring and autumn Buy shoes made of thinner kidskin, either oxfords with a leather covered military heels (straight, not too tall heel), about 5 1/2-6 cm tall or high- or low cut court shoe. The higher cut has the advantage that it it fits the foot more and makes the shoe more stable to walk in. A lowcut wingtip court shoe with 5 1/2-6 cm heel is always fashionable. (Picture source: http://sheepandchick.blogspot.com/) Winter Wear brouges, derby shoes or boots. Make sure they have thick soles and low heels. Best if they are lace-ups over a tongue. (Picture shoes: http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/) Summer court shoes in white, brown and black are always a good choice, you can also wear two-tones ones in white/black or white/brown- that's a classic. Sandals are also very suitable for hot weather. In the countryside you can always wear clogs. (Picture source: http://sheepandchick.blogspot.com/) Parties For the evenings sandals in gold and silver can be worn or court shoes in silk in white, black or coloured to match the gown. For less grand occasions choose a court shoe in suede with a covered heel. (Picture source: http://tuppencehapennyvintage.blogspot.com/) Other shoes you need are are slipper and something for rainy days, rain boots or Galoshes. Don't think that the inside doesn't matter. Brown shoes should be lined in brown, but on a black shoe, grey lining is very smart. Take good care of your shoes. A wet shoe should never be dried close to a radiator or the leather may crack. Put in a shoe block or stuff it with scrunched up newspapers instead and let it dry away from heat. When it's warm outside, then air your shoes in an open window or on your balcony. And, of course, always make sure that your shoes are brushed and shined (Picture source: http://www.batashoemuseum.ca/index.html)

The bad new is, these are the last pages I will be sharing from the Spring/Summer 1943 Montgomery Wards catalog for a while, the good news is...I now have a small collection of catalogs and will be sh
Do any of you have one of those outfits that you love beyond all reason? An outfit so perfect that you have an irrational happiness as soon as you put it on? This is that outfit for me! I have no idea why I haven't paired this blazer with this dress yet, but I LOVE IT! They're separates that I've made from 40s patterns (details below), and I never thought to put them together until the other day. I have a lot of red and blue accessories and perfectly coordinating 1950s shoes, so I knew it was meant to be! I also got some aviator sunglasses recently because my sunglasses are all super dead (like tortoiseshell peeling off, cloudy scratched lens dead). They're obviously appropriate for a 40s look because I stole them off my fictional WWII pilot boyfriend and wore them. Obviously. Now I'm not sure that aviators really work for my round face (they just seem to make it look even rounder!), but I enjoy the history and look of them so much that they're just one of those things that make me say, "FORGET the magazines! Forget the sunglasses advice articles! I have a round face and I will rock it! I like aviators too much to say no!" This outfit has made me realize how much happier I'd be with a smaller wardrobe with several solid basics like these to mix and match my statement pieces with. Obviously, I have patterns for these and have done test runs with these garments, so I'd be able to make more pretty easily. But, sigh, add it to the queue! This outfit is actually a couple weekends old, but still worth sharing (and still totally in-season for Florida!). It's super simple, but I've worn it more times than I can count lately. Oddly enough it's also garnered a lot of compliments when I go out--and people seem to instantly pick up on the 40s influence! ♥ tshirt: Anne Taylor Loft ♥ pants: made by me from the Wearing History "Smooth Sailing" pattern ♥ telephone cord bag: vintage ♥ saddle shoes: Muffy's ♥ scarf: thrifted ♥ bracelets: thrifted ♥ Navy sweetheart pin: vintage ♥ sunglasses: H&M
The term 'teenager' was coined in 1941, and Seventeen magazine printed its first issue in 1944, showing off young teenager-targeted clothing and interests. It was a new market, one that was somewhere between girls and college-age young women. Teenagers were obsessed with crooner Frank Sinatra, hung out at soda fountains, and danced all night to
