In this hands on science lab activity, students will set up a simple experiment to see sound energy. First, they will learn that sound energy is created when a force causes matter to vibrate and that it travels as mechanical waves that we can't normally see. To complete the experiment, they'll stretch a piece of plastic wrap over a mixing bowl and sprinkle ground black pepper on top. They'll bang metal objects (pots, pans, bowls) a few inches away and observe what happens to the pepper, recording their results. This resource includes: teacher directions with suggestions, discussion questions, and extension ideas 4 slides of background information about sound energy and mechanical waves 9 slides walking students through the experiment with step by step directions and photographs a student response worksheet a scoring rubric a force copy link to a digital Google Slides version Your students will love this simple but effective sound experiment and you will love that it requires minimal prep time and very few materials!
