Finding frogspawn and watching for tadpole and then frogs is one of the great pleasures of childhood. Children can learn more about the stages that go on in the frog life cycle with our colouring pages, worksheets and activities. Frogs tend to lay many eggs because there are lots of hazards to the eggs and young. These eggs are sometimes called frogspawn. About 1-3 weeks after fertilization the eggs that survive will hatch. When tadpoles first hatch they tend to cling to weeds and grasses. After about 7 to 10 days the tadpoles will start swimming around and feeding on algae. After about 6 weeks the tadpole will grow its back legs and the body starts to grow longer and the head becomes more distinct. After about 9 weeks the tadpole has grown its front legs and now looks more like a small frog with a long tail. About 12 weeks after hatching the tadpole has only a short tail, looks like a smaller version of a adult frog and is about to leave the water. The frog has now reached adulthood It leaves the water and will begin the task of finding a mate, before returning to the water to lay eggs and start the cycle again.
