Are you looking for a fun game that your students can play as they practice identifying a paragraph's text structure? This is a hands-on game that your students will love! They can play with a partner or in a small group. They will read a paragraph and then determine whether its text structure can be categorized as: → Sequence → Compare and Contrast → Cause and Effect → Problem and Solution → Description Directions and answers are included. This game is designed to be played by four people, but alternate instructions are provided for teachers who have fewer than or more than four players. To prepare the game, do the following: Print a collection sheet for each student. (There are four collection sheets in all. One collection sheet is for the Moon passages, one is for the pioneer passages, one is for the donkey passages, and one is for the coral passages.) Print the sheets that contain passages, as well. If possible, print them on cardstock to provide added durability. Cut apart the passages and place them facedown in the middle of the table. Students take turns drawing a passage strip and reading the underlined word. If the underlined word contains the topic listed on their collection sheet, they read it aloud, and state which type of text structure is utilized: description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, or problem and solution. When a student answers correctly, he or she gets to keep the card and place it on his or her text structure collection sheet. The first person to cover their categories by collecting all five of their text structures wins! But be careful! If a student draws the card that says "OUCH", he or she must return ALL of his or her collected cards back into the pot, and start over. (There are also two "Lose a turn" cards and one "Draw again" card.) If you've never played an OUCH! game in your classroom before, give it a try! It's super fun! (This popular game is also sometimes known as "Kaboom", "BOOM", or "POP".) I encourage you to take a peek at the PREVIEW!!
