This is what I do as part of my inferencing unit in high school because it teaches them the different between explicit information versus IMPLICIT information - which is where they need to use their inferencing skills. There's a little exercise where they look at an explicit phrase, and have to de-code what they think the implicit meaning behind it is. Their responses are always funny :) It's a helpful worksheet that really gets them to understand SUBTEXT - the hidden meaning behind words. For example - if someone says "Are you busy tonight?" the IMPLICIT meaning might be "if you're not busy. I want to hang out with you" TIP - I've also used this right before studying a novel / also in drama class to teach them to read between the lines.
