If you know me, you know that I love anything vintage-y and frenchy…so I have pulled together ten of my favorite paper crafts that combine those two elements to share with you. They are fun and easy to make, too! Some involve aging paper, some use sheet music, some are very Parisian and I’ve even thrown in a little Christmas for good measure! Enjoy! First, I used paper that I "aged" (instructions included) and frenchy graphics to create a set of vintage-look French candle wraps. Got some old paperback books? Give them a completely new…er, vintage…look with my French fairy tale book covers! Nothing says vintage like old filament bulbs and these filament bulb candle covers inspired by Country Living are no exception! I used print-outs of vintage maps of Paris and a fun vintage Eiffel Tower to create the feeling of a little turn-of-the-century visit to the City of Lights! Baby Kitty says this is one of his favorites because he can play Catzilla and attack the tiny Eiffel Tower! Don’t let that sweet face fool you! ;-) Some wonderfully distressed old books and a few Paris postcards from the early 1900s stacked up to create my vintage book bundle with those same postcards for you to copy and use in your projects! And yet another Parisian project involving stacks of books…a vintage photo of the Eiffel Tower is spread across the spines to create my vintage Eiffel Tower book bundle. Print-outs of old French advertisements from The Graphics Fairy were used to découpage plastic fruit and create my vintage French script fruit. Vintage sheet music found at the flea market became fun sheet music sailboats, complete with masts and pennants…perfect for summer! More vintage sheet music went into making these projects…a sheet music wreath, candles and ornaments…not just for Christmas! And finallly, sheet music…this time it’s actually scrapbooking paper…was used in these vintage paper trees! I love the way they turn simple greenery into a festive Christmas decoration! If you want to give a pristine white paper a browned, unevenly-colored aged appearance and parchment-like texture you need to use an aging technique. I love using my own aged paper for my vintage and steampunk projects. It's also very cost effective because you only need a few ingredients to create this effect instead of buying lots of expensive paper. There are a few techniques to age paper: Coffee I'm not a coffee drinker but this aroma filled powder can be much more than just a bevarage, it can be used to age paper and give it a brown antique look. There are two ways to acheive this effect: Painting with coffee Dipping in coffee Tea Tea staining will give you a lighter color and more suttle result than coffee. You can use the tea bag itself to stain the paper directly or dip the paper in the tea. You can dry the stained paper in the oven or in a sunny place. Tea Staining Spray and Ink Use a blender and a combination of distress inks like wallnut and vintage photo and ink your paper to achieve an aged look. Another technique is to spray the paper with spray ink. Spraying Paint To achieve an aged effect with paint you would need a few shades of brown and to work in stages. Layers of paint Here's a really cool technique with shoe polish. So many fun techniques to try. I hope you'll try at least one, because the effectis worth it! Our church hosted a "Kingdom Chronicles" VBS this year so I needed to come up with some simple and inexpensive medieval decorations. Here's what I made... Poster board torches (Yield 10) 3 sheets of each red, orange, and yellow tissue paper 2 sheets of black poster board (you can get 5 cones from each sheet) staples hot glue gun 11" quarter circle made using a measuring tape and pencil like a compass sticky tack or pushpins to hand the torches with Roll your quarter circle into a cone Add one staple at the outside upper corner Take one sheet of each color tissue paper (red, orange, and yellow) Lay them on top of each other and cut into quarters Bunch the centers together and staple Hot glue the stapled tip of the tissue paper to the inside of the poster board cone Toilet paper roll chandelier (Yields 2) 1 sheet of each red, orange, and yellow tissue paper, each cut into 16 rectangles 1 sheet of black poster board 12 toilet paper tubes 4 large cardboard circles (14"-16" diameter) like the ones pictured below staples hot glue gun 1. Glue 2 circles together (for strength) 2. Makes 1/2" cuts around the bottom of every toilet paper tube 3. Open up the slits and hot glue the tubes evenly around the outer edge of your circles 4. Spray paint your chandeliers from top to bottom with black spray paint 5. Make "flame" tufts out of your tissue paper and staple them at the bottom (like the torches above) 6. Stuff tissue paper "flames" into each toilet paper tube 7. Cut poster board into 1" x 6 1/4" strips (you should be able to get at least 90 strips of paper) 8. Make 6 separate paper chains of 13-15 links each (depending on how long you want them) 9. Glue 3 paper chains to each chandelier 10. Connect your three chains together with one final link. 11. Hang your chandeliers using fishing line and ceiling hooks. Dollar store tablecloth banners 2 different color dollar store tablecloths for each banner 16"-20" piece of ribbon to tie each banner fishing line or yarn to tie the two tablecloths together at the top corners duct tape or ceiling hooks to hang the banners from the ceiling The finished product - teaching section up front, craft and coloring station at the back. There are many ways to build a castle with children. Once I already made a small cardboard toy castle with my kids, but this time we wanted something more impressive. For our castle we collected cardboard boxes of different size, and toilet paper tubes. Using those building blocks, paint and some colored paper, we created this castle with floors, round towers, windows and a cone-shaped roof. This project is very easy and straightforward. Reverse the boxes, stack them one onto another, put the toilet paper rolls at the corners, paint. Place towers also at the top and around the gate. I showed how to make a cone in my post about gigantic pencils, the cone-shaped roof can be made the same way. A flag from a toothpick and piece of paper is the final touch. I think you may enjoy the Cardboard castle by Ann Wood. It's more of a piece of art than a kids craft project. Take a look.

I love all the projects everyone is doing with sheet music. Besides ebay, I have no idea where to find vintage sheet music. So... I decided to make my own. I just made photo copies of some sheet music I found at a music store. I'm not sure about copyright laws, but the copyright date on this music was 1903, and since it's just being used for craft projects, I think it's ok. Then I tea stained the music. I used one family size tea bag in two cups water. I poured the tea into a large pan and soaked the music for 30 minutes. I removed the music and layed it to dry on some newspaper. To get the darker stain spots, I sprinkled some instant tea on the newspaper and put the music face down. It dries really fast and I love the way it turned out. I almost forgot to tell you, I did iron the music. Put a paper towel on top, iron one side for a few seconds, then turn over and iron the other side. I tried printing a botanical image on the music. I think that look has possibilities as well. I'm sure you could achieve different looks with stronger tea or different soaking times. And I don't need to tell you all the ways you can use the music. For now, I'm just enjoying it as it is. Have you made any projects with sheet music? I would love to hear you ideas. Or send me a picture. I'll be joining some parties, so click on Link Parties on my sidebar. Janet
