HEM Architects - The starting point has to be the understanding that any new development (extension, new house or something bigger) will CHANGE the landscape that it is part of. This principle is not well served by the popular use of the term ‘landscaping’. Sadly this is embedded in the language of Planning. Giving the impression that the landscaping comprises the green bits brought in on a lorry and arranged around the buildings, perhaps even to hide them. We added an extension to the front and repositioned the main entrance. We were mindful of being in a conservation area and split the extension into two elements to minimise the overall impact on the surrounding houses

Some have been built, some never left the drawing board but they’ve all been influential in the development of our thinking and approach to designing for place and people. 4. Hunshelf Park The conversation about a new housing project in Penistone started off the back of our self-build on a shoestring entry. The site never came to market but the process led our client to buy a site in Stocksbridge, Sheffield and for us to develop the first custom-build, Passivhaus housing scheme in the city.
