The Unified Modeling Language (UML) was created to forge a common, semantically and syntactically rich visual modeling language for the architecture, design, and implementation of complex software systems both structurally and behaviorally. It is analogous to the blueprints used in other fields and consists of different types of diagrams. UML diagrams describe the boundary, structure, and the behavior of the system and the objects within it. UML has tools that can be used to generate code in various languages using UML diagrams. UML has a direct relation with object-oriented analysis and design. There are many problem-solving paradigms or models in Computer Science, which is the study of algorithms and data. There are four problem-solving model categories: imperative, functional, declarative and object-oriented languages (OOP). Object-oriented languages dominate the programming world because they model real-world objects. The team of Grady Booch, Ivar Jacobson, and Jim Rumbaugh made all three methods stronger and improved the final product. The efforts of these thinkers resulted in the release of the UML 0.9 and 0.91 documents in 1996. It soon became clear that several organizations, including Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM saw UML as critical to their own business development. UML is a combination of several object-oriented notations: Object-Oriented Design, Object Modeling Technique, and Object-Oriented Software Engineering. UML uses the strengths of these three approaches to present a more consistent methodology that's easier to use. UML represents best practices for building and documenting different aspects of software and business system modeling. The Three Amigos published The Unified Modeling Language User Guide in 1999, and an update which includes information about UML 2.0 in the 2005 Second Edition. Today, many large companies use UML for software development, including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun. In addition, many vendors utilize another OMG standard, Model Driven Architecture (MDA), to create tools that help translate UML designs into platform-specific architectures. How UML help in software development? UML is providing the system architects, software engineers, and software developers with tools for analysis, design, and implementation of software-based systems as well as for modeling business and similar processes. UML gives project managers, architects, and developers a common language for describing an intended solution. You can deploy it alone or with other OMG standards to develop object-oriented solutions based on best-practice modeling techniques. However, you can also use UML to design organizational architectures and other, non-software-related systems. The UML specification that defines the OMG standard is available for free download. It describes the 12 diagram types, the elements used to create them, and semantics and notations used when modeling. With the use of UML, an appropriate UML development tool, and an application processor methodology, the design and refining of the application are shifted from the development phase to an analysis and design phase. This reduces risk and provides a vehicle for testing the architecture of the system before coding begins. The analysis and design overhead will eventually pay dividends as the system has been user-driven, documented and when it’s time to start developing, many UML tools will generate skeleton code that will be efficient, object-oriented and promote re-use. For software developers, it is easier and faster to write better and more efficient code using UML diagram because they can easily understand what to implement which is not case with plain text. So UML diagrams are not made to show stakeholders how you or your company are going to make solutions for them.UML diagrams are made for them who writes code.
