A fresh, and broad curatorial mix.
Prince William paused at several graves during his tour of the cemetery Photo: Getty Images Upon the Prince’s arrival at the cemetery there was a picture set out of his mother laying a wreath…
Many saw Kate’s polka dot dress as a subtle tribute to Princess Diana who wore a green spotted outfit as she left the same hospital with Prince William in 1982

Unlike the other women represented by these shawls, Deb Carlson is not famous. But like the other women, she is someone I deeply admire, and to whom I owe a great deal. I met Deb in college, when I was put across the hall from her son freshman year. I was ill and very far from home, and she became a second mother to me; she would take us grocery shopping whenever she came to visit and adamantly refused to let us pay, she sent me flowers during the trauma of senior year, and she and her husband Robbin welcomed me into their home for two Thanksgivings. Her enthusiasm and generosity were legendary, and she spoke even more quickly than I do. My family stayed at their house for a few days after graduation (where they had hung an Oregon flag!), and that is the last time I got to see her. She suffered from Lyme Disease and ALS, and I returned to the west coast, but we emailed often (she sometimes knew more about what was going on in my life than her son did!), and she was an incredible support to me through my own battles with chronic illness. She died this January, on her own terms, and while I am so glad she is no longer in pain, I miss her terribly. (For a more complete story of the end of her life, see Robbin’s post here; my goodbye letter to her is available here.) Deb’s favorite color was purple, so I dedicated this shawl to her. I think she would have thought it was beautiful, with the rich color, fuzzy halo, and oodles of delicate beads along the edge; the mohair is delightfully warm, too, despite being so lightweight. Shibui is based in Portland, and I hope to stop by the next time I’m up there, because I love everything about their yarn, and I think you will, too. If you choose this, I hope you feel wrapped in her warmth and my love for her every time you wear it. (Because it is lace weight, the yarn is somewhat fragile, so I would recommend keeping your shawl away from cats, babies, cacti, and other grabby types. Wash it gently, and it should last you for many years!) If you would like, the charitable donation for this shawl can be made to the Thompson Hose Co, Deb’s local volunteer fire department. You can read the story why here. The ALS Association would also be particularly appropriate, given her illness. CARE: This shawl has been washed in Eucalan, which contains lanolin; this makes the animal fibers very soft and shiny, but if you are sensitive to lanolin, I can rewash it in Soak. (Please note that this will add a couple of days to processing time.) Any gentle handwash detergent will get it clean, but Eucalan and Soak are both no-rinse and therefore gentler on the fibers, so I recommend using one of them when washing your shawl. After letting your shawl soak, gently squeeze out the water (don’t wring it!); you can also roll it up in a towel and gently press to get out more water, then shape it, spread it out, and lay it flat to dry.
As much as I gush about my love of new things, the truth is, I really enjoy being in a committed relationship with more than a few things in my closet. Take this IRO blazer or Stuart Weitzman loafers for example, I’ve had them for about a year and a year and a half respectively … Read More
