This week's Living Large In Small Spaces feature is a summerhouse in Denmark. Welcome to the ninety-fourth post in the series "Living Large in Small Spaces". From the inviting, vine-covered front porch to the steps of the back door, this little cottage is a quaint and unassuming haven. The front door opens into one room that encompasses living, dining and kitchen. Thanks to white walls and ceiling, as well as plenty of windows, the small space is bright and airy. Shelves tucked close to the open beam ceiling hold books and collectibles, saving valuable floor space. The unpretentious furnishings give the impression that this cottage has been here for generations, and that each piece has been lovingly collected over time. An antique stove heats the cottage. The hanging punched tin candelabra embellished with handmade flowers and crystal drops adds a whimsical touch. Interior walls were removed to open up the space and allow room for a dining area. I love the wood floor. Color is subtly introduced to the cottage in the form of textiles and artwork, as well as pottery and books. And, of course, those beautiful fresh flowers! The overall feel of the cottage is serene, and seems to invite napping and reading. Perfect for a summer respite. An alcove serves as additional sleeping space. (Don't ask me how one gets to the top bunk or keeps from rolling over the edge.) A simple white cutwork tablecloth and flowers dress the little table. The back door has so much character. Outdoor "rooms" encourage relaxed living. I imagine lazy summer days spent here. A 500 year-old "rough-luxe" barn located in Malvern Hills, Worcestershire is this week's featured small space. Welcome to the 114th post in the series "Living Large in Small Spaces". Discovered by the current owners "whilst looking for the perfect retreat to escape," the Grade II listed barn has quite a historic past: "There is reputed to be a plan of Bank Farm area in The West Minster Abbey Archives, showing the house and pond as it was in the1400's. By 1876 the farm belonged to Earl Beauchamp and in 1919 was sold to Stephen Ballard the second, who was son of Stephen Ballard who engineered and built the railway tunnel through the Malvern Hills. He also built Jubilee Drive which runs from the Wyche cutting to British camp to celebrate Queen Victoria´s Golden jubilee in 1887. The farm was then turned into a fruit farm. Some of these ancient apple trees remain in the orchard in front of the barn, which has an amazing display of pink blossom in May." Nestled between the primeval apple orchard and a private fishing lake, this stunning barn conversion has kept its historic roots without sacrificing modern conveniences. The sympathetic renovation retained the original timbers, stone walls and vaulted truss ceilings. Additional wood and stone came from around the farm. Facing the double blue barn doors is a velvet sofa that lends a touch of luxury to the rustic interior. The trunk coffee table adds character and doubles as hidden storage. The view from this space is breathtaking. In this open floor plan the sofa separates the sitting area from the dining. There's a sense of balance here, with the furnishings complementing the architectural beauty and not upstaging it. As the owner explains, "The refurbishment of the barn came from the desire to preserve and highlight the amazing internal features but not overwhelm them with the interior refurbishment It was so important to utilise many pieces I have collected over the years like the little time worn wall cupboard, the antique meat safes, the vintage console table and all the collectable accessories." The handmade kitchen was repainted to Lead Grey. Stairs lead to the hayloft -- more about that later. In a sea of soothing neutral tones the kitchen's red cooker makes a perfectly bold statement. Behind a "puddled heavy" curtain lies the master bedroom. Large enough for a king-sized bed with room to spare for an antique dresser An ensuite bathroom has shabby chic charm. And a gorgeous walk-in shower. Upstairs the old hayloft is now a sanctuary for naps or curling up with a good book. Or just enjoy the fresh air and views from the hayloft's open wooden door. Outdoor living is as special as the indoors at Wishbone. Sixteen beautiful green acres surround the barn. The private picnic area offers a lakeside view while enjoying a meal. A friendly equine neighbor completes the bucolic scene. Wishbone's owners sum up the wonder of this place so well: "We were inspired to make this humble countryside building an interesting and beautiful place to stay and with the barn doors open and the amazing view of the Malvern Hills unfolded before you – it feels magical and a place unspoilt and changed by time and time to rediscover yourself." I couldn't agree more. Seeing Wishbone inspires me to bring more magic into my own small cottage. Pixie Nook Cottage Photos used with the permission of Unique Home Stays www.pixienook.uniquehomestays.com, contact number + 44 (0) 1637 881942 Recently I received an email from Claire at Unique Home Stays in the UK ("Unique Home Stays offers luxury private house accommodation in more than 140 homes scattered over 14 different countries.") Claire had found my blog and had some nice things to say about it. Then she asked if I'd like to blog about one of Unique Home Stay's cottages "Pixie Nook". Once I looked at the stunning photos of Pixie Nook I sent a "definitely" reply to Claire and here we are. It's my pleasure to share this pretty one bedroom cottage with you. Step from the picturesque Cornish countryside through the powder green door of this 300 year-old traditional stone cottage and get ready for a surprise. There's nothing conventional about this cottage decor. Dressed in luscious contemporary florals in jewel tones, the rooms suggest a cottage garden. Lots of attention to detail here. The colored glass at the windows echo the hues in the drapery fabric and the area rug. Pixie Nook is Grade II listed, which in the UK means it is of "special interest". The present owners purchased the cottage in 2011 and renovated and decorated the property themselves, with the help of the Interior Styler at Unique Home Stays Jess Clarke. We classic cottage lovers can appreciate the care the owners took to maintain the architectural integrity throughout their home. I love the white granite walls, deep window wells, beamed ceilings and painted wood floors. The bright colors of the accessories contrasted against the white walls and cupboard create a cheery dining area. I knew you'd want a closer look at that gorgeous teapot. There's no lack of modern amenities in this kitchen, yet the blue cabinets with the scalloped edging and the wood countertops satisfy the longing for an old-fashioned cottage. Ahhh, a white farm sink. It speaks "charm" to me. Not to mention that marvelous door. I'm really intrigued by this headboard. It looks like velvet. I imagine breakfast in bed followed by lollygagging the morning away with a good book or magazine. (I still like to thumb through home decorating magazines, don't you?) There's a little mid-century, a touch of vintage and a spot of modern throughout the cottage. It's not easy to pull off an eclectic look, but these folks did a smashing job. Did you notice the cup and saucer lamp bases? Just a hint of whimsy. Very smart. Are you as crazy about those hook and eye locks on the window as I am? So quaint. And who could resist a walk in the countryside after seeing this view? After a soak in the tub I'll meet you on the patio for a late lunch. It appears to be early spring when these photos were taken. I'm picturing this scene with morning glories climbing up the trellises and a scramble of perennials under the windows. A window box or two wouldn't hurt, either. Very inviting. Every cottage needs a stone wall somewhere. Afternoon tea in the garden, anyone? That's a cedar hot tub, upper left in the photo. The lighting is enchanting. Very effective for evening enjoyment. I hope you enjoyed the tour of Pixie Nook. And to Claire I'd like to say a big "thank you" for allowing me to share this delightful place with all my cottage friends. If you're interested in booking a stay at Pixie Nook, Claire invites you to travel on over to www.uniquehomestays.com. Blessings,
