This week we created a string with a tangle. Great fun, to be sure. We also used just two patterns and yet the combinations and variations are each so unique. Let's take a look ~ The first tile arrived from Joke Leussenkamp (The Netherlands) ~ My first attempt with these patterns! I feel maybe it's a little to much. Greetings from The Netherlands Tangled Tidbits - *wonderful balance of black, white, and brown - even with the shading and highlighting *black and white perfs, aura in Echoism From Lori Byerly (Washington State and from the road...) and here on her blog ~ What a delightful duo of patterns. It was fun using a pattern as a string (I used it as a border as well). Tangled Tidbits - *Quib incorporated as a border as well as a featured tangle *Echoism springs from Echoism From Sarah (Michigan) and here on her blog ~ Quib was a tangle I forgot about but luckily could still attempt to draw. I'm not sure if I interpreted the other tangle as well, but it gave me a chance to try out some shading with markers. The sparkles are from a glitter GellyRoll pen. I thought this was a really inventive string idea. I never would've thought of it! I'm not sure I got the instructions quite right, but I am pleased with the result. Especially after reading Margaret Bremner's "and then some" on Echoism. A lot of great stuff there! And that table is awesome! I'm really happy with the results. I got lost in the process more with this one than any other I've done. I kept picking it up yesterday and adding more detail and hoping that I wasn’t going getting too carried away. My 005 pen ran out of ink, and I forgot to leave room for my signature (but I did manage to squeeze it on)! Shading was challenging on the Echoism parts! I think Quib is going to be a favorite, I really had fun a lot of fun with this one! Still, I somehow like the outcome had much fun with this challenge! Tangled Tidbits - *Echoism Quib lines *multiple start and end points of Quib From Allison Durno (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada) ~ Intriguing challenge this week! I practised it a few times before I started this square, though I knew from the start I wanted to twine the Quib strands far enough apart to be able to add the Echoism tangle in the spaces left by the strands. Colouring in some of the spaces black added some drama and I like the effect of making the background light gray with marker. I embellished the Echoism with some simple lines and dots and found myself quite pleased with the result. Hmmm, both pattern are wonderful in each case for themselves, elegant and rich in variation. But how now do both agree together on a tile? At the beginning I had no idea.But I have stretch my creative muscles a little bit, start to draw Quib on a light-grey tile and then comes the flow. While I have drawn the first, I had the idea to create a Zendala with both patterns. Therefore, are this week two contribution. It was just to be a little sketchbook play before I got down to business on a proper tile, when a rainstorm suddenly hit, separating me from my proper tiles...so I just waited out the storm continuing on with this. Well, by my standards anyway! I didn't like my idea of filling either side of Quib with auras of Echoism but I gritted my teeth and did it for lack of a better idea. I wanted some more black so I ended up putting those little black dots in the Echoism. I started using the brown pen on a whim and continued to do it and liked the outcome. I wish I had been more creative and imaginative with the filler-tangles but my repertoire is limited. I like how it came out all twisty and stands out because of the brown. I really enjoyed doing this, as I went along. There's very minimal shading as I liked the white, especially the little space along the Quib on either side. Here's my tile for this week. I can't say I'm happy with it at all. I couldn't seem to get my head around how the two tangles would work together and I think it shows. It's a shame because they're both great tangles. Oh well, maybe next week my brain will make something a little more picturesque! I found the challenge unexpectedly hard. Echoism did not want to go inside Quib no matter what variation I tried. My best effort ended up with Echoism in the backgroun of Quib instead. Your ZIA table looks incredible. I’m going to try that but on a smaller scale. I have never done Quib before, and am not sure I did it correctly … I was going from memory when I first looked at the challenge. There was no table, I basically held the tile on my lap or in the air to work on it but I enjoyed the process and didn’t worry about ‘perfection’. And it made the wait far more enjoyable. Marla Mendenhall from California ~ What a great challenge! I've used both Quib and Echoism before in pretty traditional ways, but what fun to push my creative boundaries. For Tile One I "echoed" Echoism and wove ribbons of Quib through it, and in Tile Two I wove a wire of Echoism around pillars of Quib and sent little balls down it. For Tile Three I played with variations of Echoism, looping them through each other in rows in the bottom corner, and making the loops triangular in the border on the left and echoing the design in the spaces. (Tis true!) This was one of those weeks full of meeting life's challenges when I much would have rather spent all my hours playing with these two patterns. Zenlicious!
