This is a two week unit based on the picture book Do Not Open by Brinton Turkle. Different elements of fictional texts will be analyzed, and students will engage in a creative writing activity as well. The unit is appropriate for students from about grade three up to grade eight. The text is accessible for students of many ages, and it follows the standard plot element graph very well. Included as well are a couple of pages which can be displayed on a bulletin board, and students who benefit from the physical manipulation of objects will enjoy the cut and sorting activity related to the sequencing of plot events. The worksheets can be printed in colour to help engage the students and distinguish between the different types of worksheets. Evaluation of reading and writing can occur according to your own standards or expectations, and visual arts evaluations can be incorporated by making the illustrations a mandatory component of the creative writing pages. I welcome any comments and suggestions on the unit, and I hope it furthers the literacy development of your students.
