december started off very frustrating. i had a mess all over my studio. and when that's a mess i'm a mess. now both my studio and i are on good terms and in love :) let's update via photos shall we? xoxo December 4:: ROCK OUT. saturday was definitely a HUGE highlight for us. We both love future of forestry and saturday mr.handsome surprised me with tickets to see them rock christmas music. JOY. Complete Joy. Even in blue he looks hot xoxo. Except when he keeps shoving the coffee cup in his face to block my shot. that. that's just not cool. but whatevs. i got the shot :) i forgot how amazing live music is. it made me want to bang on some drums again. (mental note: crash guitar center sometime soon for a free drum fest :) December 5:: Organize & package etsy items. I'm sure i don't have to refer back to the previous post for this ;) but i needed my studio to function again in a better way for my little shop. And thankfully the organizing continued. the show must go on right? lol! Packaging a few orders got my cheer back :) December 6:: Visual Transformation of my shop complete. Before the studio closet was just for pretty much everything. Now, it's all for my etsy items. Starting 2011 i have some pretty fun plans for my little shop and a very fun meeting with my accountant this friday to plan for it. Taking a little idea to the next level requires planning and this little studio needs to reflect that.. and now it does. This, this is what a little corner of my shop would look like if i had my own storefront. It had to be visually pleasing. Because, ya know... what if you come over or something right? gotta look good ;) All the drawers are filled with items in the shop. Everything is now in one place. I will have to do a complete photo op of all my drawers to show you i really did clean and organize and not just shoved everything in hahaa... but for now, ya just have to trust me. xoxo December 7:: Add final touches to my little Crochet Garland love. I put the finishing touches on my little festive garland. I crocheted the star and the colorful balls of yarn. The bird I cut from a vintage quilt i scored for $5 on saturday. Perfect for cutting as it had some damage. but look at the cute vintage fabrics! love! I had so much fun using up bits and pieces of left over yarn for this project. Although it was a bit time consuming crocheting all the yarn balls, halfway through i just wanted to buy the felt balls i see everywhere... but i don't need another hobby :) I made do and it saved money so it was all good. good times xo Thank you love for reading through this :) I have a few questions to answer from the previous post ... Emily said... Wow- just in those pics, you are WAY more organized than me. Seriously. You take such great photographs! Did you take any classes or anything? I really want to graduate from my little point and shoot, but am waiting for a small windfall of moolah:) And... I love me some starbucks, too, for a little motivation. Thanks Emily! I did take 2 classes while in art school. One on the history of it and the other how to print both B&W and color in the dark room. I later taught Photography + b&w dark room developing at a private high school for about 1 year and a half. That was almost 8 years ago! yikes! I worked my way up from the old slr's to a canon rebel to what i have now canon 40D. I was just talking about this to mr.handsome ( as so many friends are looking to upgrade cameras) that if i hadn't taken those classes on photography i would've never upgraded to an SLR camera. I think the more you know the better your photo's will be no matter what kind of camera you have. Most of the time if you know technique (and photoshop :), you can score better photos all of the time. Trust me, you can do it :) I wish you all the happiness and success love. ps: definitely get some starbucks for a little motivation :) Maureen said... I live by the motto that everything is better with a frappuccino. Pedicures, shopping, just walking around, it just improves the moment. I wish I had a little crafty area like yours. I know though from experience...you spend more time organizing and putting the stuff away than using it. And most importantly, where did you get that sweater? I love it. Maureen you are SO right! hahaaa! Which reminds me I need to have a sister date soon so I can do all those things :) Thank you so much for some studio love. The only reason this works for us is because we have no children. I have no clue what we will do when that time comes. no wait. we're getting rid of mr.handsome's man cave to make room for the kids :) hahaa! i'm so not kidding. Also, I bought my sweater at the fabulous Target. It's one of my all time favorites ( i bought it last year in the clearance section!) Maybe it's the buttons? Or maybe the v neck going on makes me look longer. hahaa. whatevs. i love it too. :) Emakesart said... Your studio looks amazing! And I need to ask 2 things... 1. Where did you find the white 6 drawer cabinet? (right side in1st photo) I NEED one like that desperately! and.. 2. Where did you get that fantastic orange sweater? I LOVE it! I also want to say that the last photo of you and your hubby is absolutely incredible!! That is one that will end up a keepsake to pass down to your kids and grandkids, etc. Truly breathtaking and magical!! xoEsther Hi Esther :) I bought the 6 drawer cabinet from IKEA. It's called the ALEX drawer unit on coasters and i have 2 of them. They really do hold a lot and are SO nice to have for supplies and crafts :) ps: thank you kindly for the sweet comment about our photo. It definitely turned out the way i wanted and i plan on treasuring it in my little heart. magical indeed :) As always thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing yours with me xoxo I'm off to... - pick up some starbucks love for my sister. okay. me too :) - volunteer in her 1st grade class. JOY. lol. kids are funny when they are small. xo - print these photos and start my december daily.... i'm so behind. i just gotta get it done. plus while cleaning i found tons more stuff to use up. cleaning might not be so overrated as i thought :) xoxo - d
In our old digs my design wall was limited to ONE. Now with the studio I have my own padded room;) I had one wall space left that I was told needed a bumper to protect the wall from ambitious pressers yielding an iron;) I also had two smaller pieces of cut insulation board that...Read More »
Turn your sewing room into an organized oasis
How lucky am I then!? While I was awol from blogging, I started doing things to my studio again to gain better storage and getting to my "stuff" much easier. I'm always looking to make life easier on myself....and why not I say!? So I set my husband to the task of building me a floor to ceiling shelving system for all my suitcases/ports, after I bought the Spring 2011 issue of Where Women Create. On the cover is the suitcase wall from Gail Reike's studio and knew that's what I needed for mine! Mind you, hers is much bigger than mine and her suitcases etc are just gorgeous and oh so different to the usual. Mine is still bare pine as well, but I intend staining it or painting it or or or........ any ideas would be gratefully received. :) Still, I'm loving mine over the moon, and think I have a very clever husband. It's sooooo much easier now to get to all the gear in the suitcases instead of having to unpile then pile up again all the time. Oh lucky lucky me! x Then the lovely Linda from Random Creativity and I decided we would have a little swap with each other. So fun! I sent her some chenille to make some lovelies for her grandchildren and she sent me this gorgeous wee birdie in an embellished cone. Such a lovely thing to hang from my new shelves, yes?! :) Thank you so much Linda for my sweet thing and for throwing in the lovely but very handy little extras too! x Some of you may remember that I did a post when I joined in with Georgina from Perpetual One, for Pay It Forward? This is the lovely 'handmade' that I received from her. I'm thinking it fits in so well hanging from my new shelves too. I foresee many, many things fitting in well while they hang from my new shelves! ;)))) Thanks again so much for my sweet bunting Georgina. .....and last, but not least, for today anyway, are my buys from The Collectorama that was held in Nambour last weekend. Joolz sells at the fair and I usually go up on the Friday with her to help set up, and of course we get to buy some fabulous vintage wares before we go home at the end of the day. The actual fair is on the Saturday. Not all the traders are there on the Friday setting up, but there are plenty of them for us to throw our money at! Joolz also gets to have a trawl through all the rest on the Saturday. Lucky Joolz! I've no doubt she will post about all her loot on her blog as well. That strange looking pile of things on the apple embroidered tablecloth is my half of a box of glass chandelier drops. For some reason my pics aren't all that spiffing today. Sorry. :( The white thing with the buttons down the front is actually a piece of vintage women's clothing that they used to wear under jackets instead of blouses, apparently. Bit of a cheat thing I suppose. It fits over the head and then ties around the waist with fine ties attached to the bottom. If you get my drift??I thought this one might make a lovely apron top. One day when I get around to it. Hope you all have a happy and productive week. :) The time is now. The place is here. Live the time and place. ~ My husband!

This series is all about organizational tips, strategies, products and inspiration to help you become more organized. This post has tips to help you organize your craft supplies.
Welcome to Tuesday Tips! Today we have a special post from a special friend of mine ~ Anna, from the blog, Thimbleanna. I've been following Anna's blog for a long time now and I am so happy she agreed to share a little bit of her creative space with us. She's got some great organizational tips and I know many of you will be able to relate to Anna's room ~ so check it out! ♥ ♥ ♥ Hi Everyone! I'm Anna from the blog, Thimbleanna and I'm very excited to be posting here on Amber's blog for Tuesday's Tips. I had the honor of meeting Amber at quilt market in Salt Lake City last spring -- and she's just as sweet and talented as you'd imagine from her blog (which I stalk, btw!). I really had to laugh though, when Amber asked me to post for Tuesday's Tips. My sewing room is anything but glamorous, but then I thought that my ugly might be beneficial?!? Tip #1: Work With What You Have! There are so many beautiful, inspirational sewing rooms on the internet and it's easy to become discouraged if your room isn't drool-worthy. I love seeing those gorgeous rooms and I often get some great ideas from them, but that's not my reality. My sewing room is in the basement of our home and my sewing companions are the furnace and water heater. I've often debated about turning one of my now-grown-boys' rooms into my sewing room -- it would be much prettier and I could have a window, but I wouldn't have enough room to store all of my supplies. So, I'm working with what I have and staying in the basement. I lovingly refer to it as the dungeon and I try to put a positive spin on it. My fabrics and threads won't be damaged by sunlight, right? The reality is, I don't need a beautiful room to create pretty things. I just need some supplies, my sewing machine, a few notions, and a little organization to be able to find things. When we moved into our home, the mechanicals were all on one side of an unfinished storage room, so I blocked them off with a few old hutches so that I can't see the ugly stuff. That left me with three walls -- two walls were unfinished but lined with shelving (perfect!) and a third wall was unfinished studs. The first thing we did was put pegboard up on the stud wall. I love this wall for holding notions. Someday, when I have time to frou-frou-up my sewing room, I'll put some cute stuff on this wall. The two walls with shelving hold all of my supplies. Over the years I've picked up plastic storage bins on sale (this is the perfect time of year to buy them!). This group of bins hold my fabric scraps. (See those unfinished walls back there -- I hardly even notice them anymore.) Below the bins are some of my fabrics. Tip #2: Fold Your Fabrics Nice and Tidy! When I first started blogging I stumbled upon Monica's fabric folding technique. It took me 3 days to fold all of my fabrics, but it changed my life!;-) Since my shelves are all open it's really nice to have neat fabric stacks instead of the unsightly mess that I used to have. I'd love to have some of those really cool ribbon shelves but I don't have anywhere to hang or set them. So, I improvised. I took a dowel rod and suspended it from one of my shelves with some wires. It works great to hold a lot of my ribbon spools. I do have one really cool Pottery Barn organizer that my sister gave me a few years ago for Christmas. I helps cover up some of the unfinished walls -- you can see how the ribbon looks hanging above it. Now, one last tip -- my favorite. Tip #3: Add a Little Whimsy to Your Sewing Room! It will make you happy. Here's my favorite embellishment to my unfinished room -- Shandi the Chandelier. A few weeks ago I had a few of my work friends over and they begged to see my sewing room. I was very hesitant to let them see it -- I know all of you crafty types would understand, but none of them are obsessed like we are and I worried that they might think I need psychological help when they saw all of my fabric and doodads. I finally gave in -- I'm not sure what they were thinking, but I do know that when they saw Shandi hanging from the floor-joist-ceiling, they all laughed and ooohed and aaahed. It was a fun moment for Shandi and me! So, that's it! Thank You So Much Amber for letting me share a little of your space here today! XOXO, Anna ♥ ♥ ♥ Some great ideas Anna! I definitely want to check out that link to Monica's fabric folding technique and I love how you've displayed all the loveliness that allows you to create the beautiful things that you do. Please leave Anna some comment love below. She's so sweet to have shared her creative space and some great tips with us today.
