Three stars adorn the front and back of his hat, and “1976” is on the back of his neck. Pretty shade of blue, that is almost “Wedgewood blue”, seems to be one of the least common colors in this style. Use them as intended, or they also make cute planters for little succulents, wonderful table accents, holding little sprays of flowers, coffee stir sticks, cream & sugar.. Measurements: 4” Tall 4” Wide w/ Handle 2 1/4” Diameter 6 Ounce Capacity Marked “FRANKOMA FP 1976 600” on bottom. Excellent condition. One has a manufacturing flaw on the rim of his hat, as can be seen in the last three photos. It looks like he got bumped before the clay was completely dry, and they just went ahead and glazed him anyway. The area has a bit of a rough feel to it. Four available. As a new graduate of Chicago Art Institute, John Frank moved to Norman, Okla., in 1927 to establish the first Ceramic Art Department at the University of Oklahoma. Working on various geological digs, he discovered the rich clays of the region and set up a studio using a butter churn to mix the clay and a fruit jar to grind the glazes. In 1933 he started his own company, following his dream to create a line of fine art ware and sculpture that people of everyday means could afford to enjoy. A year later, Frank’s wife, Grace Lee, suggested that the company name should incorporate both their family name and the last letters of their state. The company officially became Frankoma Pottery in 1934. Frankoma pieces made since 1954 sport a red clay from Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and are prized collectibles. Frankoma Pottery survived the Great Depression, fires, and bankruptcy, before selling the business in 1990. The new owners continued under one of Frank’s daughters leadership until 2010.
