This is one writing diagnostic that I actually look forward to reading! Usually, my AP Language and Composition students arrive on the first day not really knowing what this class is really about. I like to offer a low-stakes way to let students dive head first into the writing tasks of AP Lang in a low-stakes way. The Power of Words Writing Diagnostic is an AP-style prompt that is engaging and accessible for students at the beginning of the year ( I promise, no deer-in-the-headlights looks!). I particularly love this prompt because it also opens up a discussion of the purpose of the class and what students hope to get out of Ap Language and Composition! Here’s what you get: A print-and-go assignment sheet with lined paper for easy writing A prompt written using AP Lang wording, using a very accessible topic A rubric aligned with writing standard 1 with room for feedback I’ve also included a feedback rubric aligned to CCSS W1. Use as a self-reflection or to provide positive feedback and areas for each student to focus. It’s so easy to assess where kids are at so that you can take them where they need to be to see success on the exam! Looking for other great back-to-school and community-building ideas?
