Yuletide celebrates the darkest time of year , midwinter . For our ancestors it was a time of expectancy , a time when all eyes turned to the rising sun . The Sun is , at midwinter the furthest away from the earth and a sign was needed to ensure it was on the turn , on its way back to warm the earth and bring back fertility and plenty. This was a time when everyone knew how to grow , preserve, sew, weave, harvest , and heal . Midwinter would be a time when houses were full of stored food . Don’t forget the harvest season was still months away . Evergreen was thought to be magical , holly , mistletoe , ivy were and still are used at midwinter celebrations. All was green again , fires burned brightly , food was plentiful and ale newly brewed . Yule tide dwellings would look like summer was already here. Green and light full of plenty. This was a time of thanks and of hope . By the end of the Yuletide celebrations the Sun was returning .
