Callistephus chinensis. King Size Apricot China Asters are some of the most sensational cut flowers we know of. The large, pale pink flowers are showy without being garish, and luxuriant without going over the top. The elaborate flowers open up to 8cm (3”) across, with slightly curled petals of the creamiest pink. They top stems around 90cm (35”) tall and bloom all summer. Be sure to take frequent harvests of cut flowers, or at least keep the plants dead-headed to prolong and enhance the bloom time. Please follow the planting and spacing instructions closely. Annual. Moderately challenging Season & Zone Exposure: Full sun to light shade Starting Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, in peat pots or similar. Otherwise direct sow outdoors after the last frost date. Just cover the seeds. If starting indoors, provide bright light and a soil temperature of 10-15°C (65-70°F). China Aster seedlings are very susceptible to damping off, so provide good ventilation and only water from below. Growing Space or transplant 30-45cm (12-18″) apart. This spacing is key to success later in the season, so please follow the guidance. Do not pinch back young plants. Water regularly during dry spells. This plant is particularly sensitive to over-watering, and will not thrive if over-crowded, poorly ventilated, or situated close to a heat-reflecting surface. Mulch around the plants in summer to help keep the roots cool. Callistephus is prone to a bacteria-like organism known as aster yellows. If yellow spots become an obvious problem, destroy any infected plant before the condition spreads to others. Practice strict garden rotation with China Asters: never plant them in the same spot year after year.

It's best to start in pots early and then transplant after your last frost in the spring. While they can be transplanted their roots prefer to not be disturbed when transplanted so it's best to use a compostable peat pot, or peat pellets, when starting early in pots and plant the whole pot instead of removing the seedling when transplanting. Sow your seeds on the surface and gently press your seed to make good contact with your pre-moistened potting mix. Do not cover or let anything else (like plastic wrap) make contact with the seeds while they are germinating. Keep your seeds moist by watering from below (do not water from above) and expose your pots to light. Aster seeds will not germinate and grow in hot temperatures. If you live in a very mild zone you can try direct seeding these in spring after your last frost. Sow on the surface of your garden bed and lightly dust with screened peat to disguise your seeds from the birds. If direct sowing we suggest you don't try and transplant your seedlings but thin to 12" spacing. Asters are sensitive to heat and mildew so we like to plant them in a area that has good air flow and that gets late afternoon shade. A quick note about Asters and a fungus called Fusarium. In the same manner how Hollyhock are very susceptible to Rust, Asters are susceptible to a natural soil born fungus called Fusarium. We recommend you dust your Aster garden area in the spring (after tilling your soil), prior to sowing your seedlings, with dustable sulfur which you can get at any home improvement or garden center. In zone 7 we dust them again around the first of July just to make sure we don't have any problems with Fusarium during the summer. Sulfur raises the PH of the surface of soil, which does not kill Fusarium, but makes it difficult for it to replicate and spread.

Harvested from the gardens at Monticello.China Aster seeds were first sent to Paris from China in 1728 by a Jesuit priest. This showy annual flower was cultivated in America as early as 1737 by Williamsburg's John Custis and it grew in popularity in European gardens through the 18th century. By 1804 Bernard McMahon of Philadelphia was selling eleven cultivars of Aster chinensis in a variety of "sorts" including double and quilled forms. These seeds represent a simple, single-flowered form of China Aster in shades of blue and pink with yellow centers that are good for cutting.Sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date at 70 degrees F. Transplant to 6-packs or small pots once they have several true leaves, then harden off and plant outdoors after the last frost. Approximately 45-50 seeds per packet.
