Multi-level marketing companies are essentially disguised pyramid schemes. While MLMs are not illegal in the same way that pyramid schemes are, they are a way to avoid the law, and MLMs fall into a legal grey area. An MLM differs from a pyramid scheme in that it usually provides some kind of product or service.
