The MGB is a two-door sports car manufactured and marketed from 1962 until 1980, originally by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland. When launched it was a progressive, modern design, utilizing a unitary structure, instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction. The lightweight design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. Wind-up windows were standard, and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. A parcel shelf was fitted behind the seats. The MGB was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones designed to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph (48 km/h) impact with an immovable barrier (200 tons). All MGBs (except the V8 version) used the BMC B-Series engine with a displacement of 1797cc, early cars used a three-main-bearing crankshaft, from October 1964 a five-bearing crankshaft design was introduced, with all MGBs from 1963 to 1974 used twin 1.5-inch (38 mm) SU carburettors, from 1975 US spec cars used a single Stromberg 1.75-inch (44 mm) carburettor The MGB was originally launched in 1962 as a two seater Roadster, and was joined in October 1965 by thea fixed roof MGB GT In late 1967, sufficient changes were introduced for the factory to define a Mark II model for the 1968 model year, changes included syncromesh on all four gear ratios, with an option of a Borg-Warner 35 automatic gearbox (except in the US), a new rear axle, and an alternator in place of the dynamo with a change to a negative earth system. To accommodate the new gearboxes there were significant changes to the sheet metal in the floorpan, and a new flat-topped transmission tunnel.
