Made c.1860 by John Shadford in Caistor, Lincolnshire, this super rocking chair displays beautiful craftsmanship throughout and is dripping with antique aged appeal. The ideal fireside companion, it will add superb quality, gorgeous rich colouring and a wonderful antique aesthetic to any interior. John William Shadford (1828-1881) set up his own furniture making business in Caistor in 1850 and is most well remembered for his highly sought after iconic Windsor chairs; see the photos of his hand-sketched designs from his notebook for this exact rocking chair. A master wood-turner, Shadford used all his expertise to craft a beautifully turned double row of seven ash spindles to the back, which match the chunky back supports and arm supports above the incredibly sturdy turned legs and supporting H-stretcher, the latter all likely crafted from elm. The single-piece saddle-sculpted Windsor seat is made from solid elm showing lovely grain patterning, which matches the lovely sculpted arms with bulbous handrests, displaying beautiful natural wear and patination, and the top of the back is crowned with a delightful Shadford crest rail. All in all this is a gorgeous and rare antique rocking chair by a Windsor chair master. CONDITION This is in very good condition, especially for its age. Structurally sound, expertly crafted and clearly built to last, it shows wonderful aged colouring and patination. The only minor flaws are the to-be-expected bumps and nicks, which if anything only add to its antique appeal, and some historic wormhole marks, mostly to the underside of the seat, for which the whole chair has been woodworm treated for good measure. Overall it's a stunning rare example of antique Windsor chairs and if well looked after it should be around for and 150+ years if not much longer - please see the photos.
