In un tempo ormai lontano vi era una città dalle cui colline limitrofe scendevano a valle, rivoli e ruscelli che alimentavano pozzi e sorgenti zampillanti. Giardini lussureggianti abbellivano la città e orti rigogliosi fornivano frutta e legumi alla popolazione e nutrimento per il bestiame. L’ acqua, benedizione di Allah, era l’origine di tutto quel benessere. Finché, un brutto giorno la vita di quegli abitanti fu sconvolta da un prolungato periodo di siccità; i ruscelli scomparvero, le sorgenti si inaridirono, le piante si rinsecchirono e gli animali cominciarono a morire. Nei pozzi non c’era più acqua. Si cercò allora di scavare nuovi pozzi: tutto inutile. Al sultano dell'epoca, non restò che fare appello al più rinomato rabdomante del regno. Lo convocò a corte e gli promise che, se l'avesse aiutato a trovare l’ acqua, lo avrebbe letteralmente coperto d'oro. Il rabdomante esaminò da cima a fondo il cortile del palazzo finché il suo bastoncino, prese a curvarsi per indicare la presenza di una sorgente sotterranea. Fidando sull’ avidità dello stregone, il sultano gli raddoppiò l'onorario, pregandolo in cambio di mantenere segreta la sua scoperta. Si scavò così un nuovo pozzo e l’acqua ritornò a scorrere ma solo all'interno delle mura del palazzo; qui i giardini venivano regolarmente irrorati, le mogli e le concubine del sovrano si concedevano, ogni giorno, il lusso di un bagno. Nel frattempo fuori dalle mura i sudditi morivano di sete. L'unico figlio maschio del sultano, l’emiro “Abd al- Karim”, giovane timorato di Dio, rimase disgustato dalla vista di quello spettacolo e sentendosi in dovere di aiutare gli abitanti della sua città, mobilitò un manipolo scelto di persone di sua fiducia e stabilì un preciso piano d'azione: lui e suoi uomini, vestiti di bianco e a viso coperto, servendosi di passaggi sotterranei, sarebbero apparsi tra la gente in prossimità delle moschee, portando otri di pelle rigonfi di acqua potabile da distribuire alla popolazione. Una campanella avrebbe annunciato il loro arrivo. La gente, sbalordita, pensò in un primo momento che fossero giunti in loro aiuto gli spiriti degli antichi marabutti. L’ eco di quegli avvenimenti giunse a palazzo, dove i cortigiani e gli ulema, che non approvavano l'operato degli anonimi coppieri, riuscirono a influenzare il sultano, facendogli balenare il sospetto che si trattasse, in realtà di una cospirazione contro il potere costituito. L'esercito fu messo in allerta e fu invocata la pena capitale per gli “uomini dell’acqua”. Ma l’emiro non si scoraggiò e incitò i suoi seguaci a perseverare nella loro missione. A quel punto, il sultano, determinato ad arrestare gli insorti si appostò con le truppe davanti alla grande moschea nel giorno della preghiera ed attese finché il silenzio fu rotto dal vivace tintinnio di una campanella. Sul ciglio della strada, apparve un bianco “uomo dell’acqua" che senza alcun timore continuò ad invitare la gente ad avvicinarsi. Infuriato il sultano sguainò la spada e i soldati caricarono la folla che cercava di proteggere il portatore d'acqua, formando una barriera umana. Approfittando del momento il sultano riuscì ad avvicinarsi e roteando la spada gli troncò di netto la testa accorgendosi quando ormai era troppo tardi, che la testa del ribelle era quella di suo figlio! Improvvisamente lampi, folgori e boati assordanti scossero la terra. Spaventose trombe d'acqua si abbatterono sul paese e una furiosa inondazione distrusse quanto incontrò al suo passaggio. Il sangue che aveva impregnato il bianco abito del principe ereditario, si sparse ovunque. Sconvolti, gli abitanti, caddero nella più buia disperazione mentre il sultano, con la mente alterata dal rimorso, si tolse la vita. Il suo successore, volendo dare seguito alle suppliche degli abitanti, diede ordine di costruire, in tutti i luoghi in cui erano apparsi “gli uomini della dell’acqua", delle fontane. Da allora in tutto il Marocco, i portatori d'acqua hanno adottato un abito bianco e rosso, adorno di allegri campanelli per rendere perpetuo il ricordo del loro fondatore.
