The title seems to describe a completely different post. It's a shame how the words dark/black can have such bad or sinister connotations. Australian Artist Justin Estcourt specialises in these role reversal drawings. By reversing the background and foreground of the usual black and white ink drawings, you get this amazing contrast that really makes any illustration on the page pop. We talk about warm and cold colors; black to me, is a separate category all together. An example might make it clearer. At night in the dark looking out of the window staring into the distance, whilst focusing on nothing, a sense of calm seems to take over. A time to order your thoughts without many tiring and distracting stresses, jabbing their sharp fingers into you, trying to catch your attention for their own purposes. In the dark of the night, their effects slowly washed away by the serene clarity that silence brings; it restores and refreshes you, ready for it to start again at dawn... I think that the feeling and experiences tint the way we see other things in our lives. That is why when I see color black, I associate with what I mentioned above. Ps. Most of the drawings I found didn't have names, so I gave them some. For more of Estcourt's work here on DesignStack, press this LINK. Worlds apart connected by dark matter. Mesmerized by the raging, unyielding waters in Werner Knaupp’s paintings – what a master of dark shades, moody layers and textures. Brilliant. {All art by Werner Knaupp}
