This is the first I've seen a Black Squirrel here, and I have a lot of squirrels :) We've seen Red, Grey and a Flying Squirrel but never a black one. I believe I read they are a variation of the Grey Squirrels, but I think they are uncommon in New Hampshire. If anyone knows more about their numbers here I'd love to know more.
Have you ever thought about a condition opposite to albinism? It's called melanism, and is caused by the abundance of the dark pigment. Animals who have this rare genetic mutation look incredibly beautiful – let's take a look at them.

Color-changing mutation originated in fox squirrels but spread to eastern gray squirrels via mating

BLACK SQUIRREL MONKEY Saimiri vanzolinii Geographic Distribution and Habitat Black squirrel monkeys (Saimiri vanzolinii) are small primates endemic to the central Amazon in Brazil. They live in várzea forests, which are lowland floodplain areas along the Amazon River and its tributaries. Várzea forests also experience seasonal flooding that creates wet grasslands and floating meadows. Also known
Animals with odd coloring have always interested me. Albino, melanistic, piebald...they all just illicit so much wonder that I feel like sharing some of my favorite images I've found from around the web. They apparently fascinate other people too since zoo's and aquariums have displays of oddly colored critters either as permanent residents or travelling exhibits. They always draw huge crowds and I've even had the pleasure of seeing a large albino Alligator at the Cleveland Zoo when I was little. The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Conn. has three lobsters that are uniquely colored: Blue, Pumpkin and Calico. So here are some pictures I've found on Google; they're lumped by color group. I hope you enjoy looking at them like I do! Who knows? Maybe you'll have a chance to see one for yourself. Albinos: Melanistic: Piebald: Other: The purple polar bear is Pelusa in Mendoza City zoo Argentina. The color came from medication for a skin illness. The purple squirrel is Pete and he was found at Meoncross School in Stubbington, Hampshire. One theory is that he chewed on a purple pen and while grooming himself he spread the ink all over, but that's definately not conclusive. As you can see, the animal world has all sorts of things that boggle the mind. Normal need not apply. *chuckle* ~Shara
Sometimes nature’s color palette comes in very neutral hues. See these white wonders of the animal kingdom.
Some folks hate squirrels. Yeah. They consider them pests, much like opossums or moles. They call them "big rats with fluffy tails." Sure, they might steal a few seeds from the bird feeder or chew a few wires, but these animals definitely should get more love.
