Hi everyone. It is Sunday evening. Thankfully I already have my clothes ironed for tomorrow! That is always a bonus in the morning. I also worked on doing some organizing in my craft room, while watching Netflix. I love watching shows that I remember watching in my youth. Currently, I am going through an "Adam-12" kick. Does anyone else remember this show? I had to laugh because as a child I remember trying to figure out what they were saying on the police radio when Reed and Malloy got a call. I always thought it sounded like "Seated Man" and I never could really understood that. Now when I watch I know it is saying "See the Man". . .LOL In first grade tomorrow we are reading a book called "Franklin's Neighborhood". I have a lot of Franklin books but had not heard of this one . . .we realized it is one of the older Franklin books and in fact it is only available used or through second party sellers. Anyway, it follows Franklin as he works on a project in which he tries to decide the best thing about his neighborhood. . . Click here to see it on Amazon After we read the story, I am going to have my class do this: Click here to download and print Have a great Sunday evening and fun Monday!
Here are some great books to read in September that help teach kids about empathy, compassion, and working together. It helps build a classroom community and start the year off on the right foot! The book, Zach Apologizes, spells out how to apologize to another person in a very simple way. I made this poster to hang in our class after reading the book. You can grab a copy for your class here. There’s a great 4-part apology in the book that you can make as well. The Sneaky Weasel is a book about a Weasel who has all the fancy things, but when he throws a party for himself, no one comes. He finds out that not everyone appreciates the tricks he’s played on his friends and realizes he might have to become a better friend. Do Unto Otters is a great book to read in the beginning of the year to introduce rules – especially the Golden Rule to treat others the way you want to be treated. Well, in this case it’s OTTERS =) Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed is a fabulous book for teaching kindness. It shows that one person can make a big change on the world. Recess Queen & Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon are perfect for teaching kids to stand up for themselves. The book, One is one of my favorites. It has a powerful message that it just takes one person to stand up to a bully. It’s done in a wonderful way with colors as the characters. More books will be added soon. Hope you enjoy these suggestions and feel free to add any great books you've read in the comments. Clipart credit: melonheadz, Graphics From the Pond & Creative Clips!

Friends~I made the cutest Hurty Box for back to school! I have been working on a new author study to use with my class the first few weeks of school. I chose Helen Lester because her stories are wonderful for teaching character education and setting up a community of learners. My very favorite Helen Lester book is titled, Hurty Feelings. Besides having the sweetest cover, the character Fragility is the best. Basically, Fragility gets her feelings hurt easily and the other hippos don't want to play with her. She meets Rudy, the Bully Elephant and ends up hurting his feelings and she gets a taste of how she has been behaving. Click the image below to hear the story! I had so much fun creating activities for this story but my Hurty Box turned out so darn cute that I had to share it with you. Watch the video below to learn more about how I am using The Hurty Box in class in August! You can totally make your own cards to go inside or you can check out my new unit on TPT. Just click the cover below! It is filled with 31 pages of activities to use with the following 5 Helen Lester books: Grab a FREE download for Listen Buddy by clicking below. You can even make these adorable Buddies with your class. I had my students follow a set of verbal directions to tear construction paper to create their own version of buddy. It is a perfect listening activity for the beginning of the year and a lessons on differences. Each Buddy is unique!
