Did you know there were caves in Florida? Cave diving is popular at many of the Florida springs, but Florida Caverns State Park is the only dry cave open to the public. Behind a heavy metal door awaits exploration into another world. How did these caves form? Millions of years ago, sea levels were much higher leaving a majority of the coastal areas underwater. Over the years, as sea levels fell, debris on the sea floor hardened into limestone which was dissolved by naturally acidic groundwater, thus creating crevices large enough to walk through. The process is still occurring today when rainwater drips through the cracks forming beautiful stalactites, stalagmites and other various formations. How were they discovered? Funny story. A tree is uprooted in the forest, leaving a large hole in the earth, do you climb down that hole? That’s exactly what Oliver Chalifoux, a National Park Services geologist, did, leading to his discovery of the incredible the cave system below. The area was already being developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, who are responsible for many of the Florida State Parks. It was then that their efforts moved underground, working tirelessly in dark, damp and cramped conditions to […]

Something quite special dwells beneath the surface of New Zealand and these images prove that the country is just as beautiful below ground as it is above! The Waitomo area is famous for it’s limestone caves and within these caves are one of the most magical insects in the world, the glowworm. Glowworms emit a phosphorescent glow that light up the cave and create a surreal environment. Over the past year I have been back and forth to Waitomo’s Ruakuri Cave to master the art of photographing these magnificent little creatures - it’s been quite the experience! When the headlamps are out and all you can see are the glowworms, you can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped into James Cameron’s Avatar Pandora, it’s just unreal! Photographing glowworms is very similar to shooting the night sky, however the exposure time can be much longer.
These places possess such incredible and unusual colors it’s hard to believe they exist.
If there was one place that I knew I wanted to visit on my National Park trip, it was Thor’s Cave Peak District! I mean, who doesn’t want to visit a mysterious cave high up

These stunning caves aren't part of some fairy-tale world or horror movie - they can be found in some of the world’s most remote places in Asia, North America and Europe. Caves like these usually form when water seeps down through cracks in limestone rock. Over millions of years, these openings, and the limestone left behind by dripping water, can form the majestic caves you see here.

The Huka Falls are a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo in New Zealand. A few hundred meters upstream from the Huka Falls, the Waikato River narrows from approximately 100 meters across into a canyon only 15 meters across.
