The rescue hen, ex battery chicken painting, "Belle.” ABOUT ME My name is Lizzie Beckerley from the Sulky Cow Gallery in the UK. I am a Welsh artist and my passion is painting happy, whimsical, quirky pictures, usually of animals. ABOUT THE PAINTING Here are high quality giclee canvas prints, taken from my original oil painting of my rescue chicken painting, "Belle.” I have my very own ex battery hens and so I’m particularly fond of painting these wonderful, cheeky brown hens, who all have their own individual characters. Some cheeky, others shy. This picture would make the perfect gift for any chicken or hen lover. CANVAS PRINTS Our rescue hen canvas giclee prints are ready to hang. You do not need to frame them. They are printed onto our quality cotton canvas. The canvas is stretched around wooden stretcher bars of 2cm depth. This "frameless" way of presenting the picture makes it look as if it is "floating" on the wall, giving it a lovely contemporary feel. They are finished in a subtle gloss varnish. The canvas prints of this recuse hen painting are 9 x 14 inches. If you'd like a paper print of my ex battery hen picture, please see my other listing. WHAT IS GICLEE? Giclee (pronounced je-clay) is a type of very high quality printing ink. Giclee comes from the French word "gicler" to squirt. The lightfast inks, which are acid free and lightfast, are sprayed onto the paper. It is believed that this process achieves the closest match technically possible to the original piece of artwork. Giclee prints use inkjet technology and are far more sophisticated than your normal desktop printer. Giclee prints are known for their longevity and are the choice of art galleries, museums and collectors. ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING My original oil painting is available. I shall list it here in due course. COPYRIGHT Copyright of all pictures remain with the artist Lizzie Beckerley at Sulky Cow art gallery. Thank you for looking at my chicken painting. How illustrator Bob Venables produced a quintessentially English look for chef Heston Blumenthal’s delectable food range and its packaging.
Well, it takes more than one word to describe Edna Mae! She is the Grande Dame of the chicken run and nothing (and nobody) gets past without close inspection. She's a Laced Polish chicken - woohoo, crazy feathers! So cute and sassy! No one gets a chicken leg up on her! Edna Mae and her sister, Maybelline, started out in a basket of eggs given to Farmer Czeslaw Jankowski, Jr. in exchange for a meaty hambone. As Farmer Czeslaw was hungrily cracking the eggs looking forward to a thick slab of ham to go with his neighbor’s farm fresh eggs, out cracks lil ol’ Edna Mae! Not to be outdone, Maybelline pecked her way out of the shell shortly thereafter. The battle was on, Maybelline wanted to hatch first and Edna Mae was furious at Maybelline’s attempt to upstage her grand entrance. Farmer Czeslaw was none too pleased as he said, I am a pig farmer, not a silly ol’ chicken farmer!” (his words, not mine). Those two chicks were going at each other right from the get go. Farmer Cze said, “When I said I wanted fresh eggs, I didn’t mean that kind of fresh!” He tried to exchange them for two other farm fresh eggs, but once the chicken farmer- Oskar Meijer - heard the ruckus, he told Cze to keep ‘em and he threw in an extra dozen on the house…er…farm. Cze decided Edna Mae and Maybelline could be free range hoping they’d just disappear. The girls free ranged their way back to the chicken run and life goes on. And on. And on. Both Edna Mae and Maybelline are bossy so if you're doing a grouping, we highly recommend putting Dave or Howard between them (they don't call Dave the Equalizer for nothing). Hand painted original art by Lynn Elam Bonge. She uses acrylic paint on a gessoed 6 x 6 canvas. The painting is finished with an acrylic medium to preserve the beautiful color. Lynn's chickens are very creative and you can see the personality in each piece. The characters shown are in order: Edna Mae the Polish Hen, and Maybelline (Edna Mae's trashy twin sister); Howard (Peeking Around the Side); Dave (You Talkin' To Me?); Mademoiselle Delphine (she’s become very popular among the chicken runners and the reason is because she makes homemade elderberry wine - her own secret recipe I might add - and her favorite saying is, “It’s 5:00 somewhere!”) and Abner the Carnival Strong Man Chicken Boy.

When an old Barred rock hen goes "broody", she will find a safe play to nest for the next 21 days. She may even use an old peach basket to set her eggs if she can't find anything better. She only leaves the nest once a day for a quick drink and bite of food, then back on the eggs before they cool. We just placed 15 dozen eggs in the incubator and await the arrival of a new batch of chicks just in time for Easter. Pen and ink drawings of this hen are available for $40.00.
