Columns that we see in today's architecture were originated by the ancient Greeks. The three columns are the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders. All of the orders have a capital, or top, and a shaft. Although the Doric column does not have a base, or footing, the Ionic and Corinthian ones do.

A column consists of a shaft together with its base and its capital. The column supports a section of an entablature, which constitutes the upper horizontal part of a classical building and is itself composed of (from bottom to top) an architrave, frieze, and cornice. This is spring 1905 and the Steeplejack firm of W. Larkins Co Ltd. are at work cleaning Nelson's Column for the first time since it was erected in 1843 . The firm had been founded by Willliam Larkins in 1897 and had their base in Bow, East London; that's him at the top next to Lord Nelson. They are still in existence but are now based in Harlow, Essex. As far as I know they are still periodically employed in cleaning the Column, each time they remove approximately 800cwt of grime, soot and pigeon faeces. William Larkins wrote a book entitled "The Life of a Steeplejack" in 1908 and it was republished in 1926 as "Steeplejacks and Steeplejacking". The Column is being cleaned in anticipation of the celebrations on 21st October 1905 for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
