This is a cheap and simple patio cover made from easy to find materials and requires almost no experience to build. The cost for all the materials is only about $700. Once the parts were all cut, my wife and I were able to build the entire frame in a day. I can't tell you how much this has improved our backyard time. The cushions on our patio furniture used to always be wet. Now we have nice dry chairs to sit on every evening, rain or shine. I purposely designed this to use only materials that were cheap and easy to transport. Basic 4x4's, 2x4's, and 2x6's. And nothing over 12 feet long so it would all fit in my 4-Runner. No heavy parts or complicated cuts. I designed the overall dimensions to fit my house/patio situation (Roughly 10' by 13'6"). I do recommend the Kreg K4 Pocket Hole system for this project. I use a lot of pocket holes in my designs because it produces strong joints that look clean and professional. Plans include: - List of Materials - Animated Video and instructions - Cut List - Detailed Assembly Drawings - Digital CAD file for reference (STL and Parasolid*) *I recommend uploading the .x_b file to Autodesk A360 file viewer and using it for reference on your phone or tablet as you build. It allows you to select each part and see the part number. This is VERY useful and makes the building process super easy.
So let’s start from the beginning with the design. My husband wanted the biggest deepest patio we could get with unobstructed views. Our current patio was 30’ long and that length was good so that we didn’t cover the windows to two of our bedrooms. Our house is already on the darker side and we wanted to keep as much natural light inside as possible. So we knew 30’ long, but how were we going to that big of a span without posts in the middle? I didn’t think it was possible, but my husband wouldn’t give up on it. So I went and talked to an architect friend and he said it would be possible with an 18” glulam.
