I thought it would be a nice way to spend my weekends, giving Whiskers new looks and learning a new skill. The journey was filled with trials and errors, but every stitch I made brought me closer to creating adorable hats. Today's pattern is a crochet pattern, not a knit pattern -- although it's very easy to knit a dog bow tie as well! Doesn't my pup Roscoe look dashing in this bow tie? This is perfect for Halloween, Christmas, photo shoots, or anytime you want friends and family gushing over your dog more than usual. The pattern is below; non-crocheters can find the finished item to purchase here... MATERIALS: -Worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Wool Ease in Ranch Red for the pictured bow tie) -Size J-10 crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge -Scissors -Needle -2 buttons Also helpful to have are a measuring tape and the canine recipient of your bow tie. If this isn't possible, err on the too-big side when making the collar. Gauge: 1 inch= 3.25 sc PATTERN: THE BOW: To begin, ch 40. Join in the 10th ch from the beginning (you are leaving a chain of stitches to wrap around and create the bow tie later). Rnds 1-5: sc in each st around. Rnd 6: sl st in each st around. Ch 10 in first st of round. Cut yarn. To make the bow, center the 2 chain tails at the back of your work. Bring both tails toward the front and wrap each tightly around the middle of the crochet loop, forming a bow shape. You'll probably be able to wrap each around twice. Single knot the tails together in the back. **For a large-and-in-charge or teeny-tiny dog, you may want to adjust the size of the bow tie: simply increase or decrease the number of ch in the beginning, and add or subtract rows of sc as necessary.** THE COLLAR: **Measure around your pup's neck to get a sense of how long the collar needs to be. My dog Roscoe, above, has a 9.5 inch neck. I then add an inch to account for the buttons. To make a collar that is 10.5 inches long, I begin by ch 35. Remember to adjust for the size of your dog's own neck.** Begin by ch 35, turn. Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each ch to the end of row, ch 1, turn. Row 2: Sc in each st until the end of row. Cut yarn. **If you have a big dog and want a thicker collar, simply add a row or two of hdc.** FINISHING: 1. With a yarn needle, securely sew the bow tie to the center of the collar. Weave in ends. 2. Sew a button on the top of the collar (bow side) on one end and the bottom of the collar on the other end. This allows the collar to have a more adjustable fit without the tail end of the collar flying around on your dog's neck. The picture below shows you how this will work: Your collar is finished! Button it onto your dog, and then go ahead melt a little bit inside with how cute he looks. You may also want to have a conversation with him about not letting his dashing good looks and all the attention go to his head. Check out that model pose! He could be in a J.Crew catalog. Hope you enjoy this crochet pattern! Let me know if you have any questions; I'll respond in the comments below! -Megan P.S. Have a girl pup?
