1960 : le Mali accède à l’indépendance. En pleine guerre froide, il choisit d’intégrer le bloc socialiste et de couper définitivement les ponts avec son passé colonial. C’est dans ce contexte politique marqué que sept jeunes étudiants maliens sont envoyés à Cuba en 1964. Le groupe, qui se formera un an plus tard à La Havane sous le nom Las Maravillas de Mali, va alors symboliser bien malgré lui les alliances passées avec le bloc de l’Est, et représenter la face joyeuse d’un « internationalisme prolétarien » dont Cuba se veut le leader. In 1960, Mali became independent and, in the middle of the Cold War, chose to join the socialist bloc and definitively break with its colonial past. In this political context, seven young Malian students were sent to Cuba in 1964. A year later, they formed a band called Las Maravillas de Mali, which, despite themselves, symbolised alliances with the Eastern bloc and represented the joyous face of a ‘proletarian internationalism’ that Cuba aspired to lead.
