Ded Moroz, translated to (Grand)father Frost, or Old Man Frost, is a legendary Slavic character that makes his rounds every New Year’s Eve. Along with his companion, Snegurochka, he brings delight to children as the two provide the little ones with gifts.
Wij hebben het best getroffen met onze aardige Sinterklaas. In andere landen duiken heel wat minder beminnelijke personages op. Zeven enge kindervrienden. Hoort wie klopt daar? Ded Moroz (Grootvader Vorst) Waar? Rusland en een aantal voormalige Sovjet-landen zoals Wit-Rusland en Oekraïne. Kostuum? Sinterklaas, maar dan in traditionele Russische rode of blauwe kaftan en bontmuts. Wat als je stout bent? Dan krijg je geen cadeaus. Waarom? Grootvadertje Vorst is de kwaadste niet, maar heeft wel een politieke achtergrond. Hij begon als bruut in 19-eeuwse verhalen die stoute kinderen in een zak stopte en in ruil presentjes achterliet. Met zijn staf bevroor hij het landschap. Grootvader Vorst was in de vergetelheid geraakt nadat de antireligieuze Sovjetrepubliek Kerst rond 1917 had afgeschaft. Maat Stalin blies hem in 1935 nieuw leven in voor een feestdag op 31 december. Het mocht geen Kerst heten, zelfs al werd er een versierde dennenboom neergezet en kwam een bebaarde man langs om kinderen cadeautjes te brengen. Die man was Grootvadertje Vorst. Hij ontvoerde niet langer kinderen, maar was een kindervriend en droeg op last van Stalin een blauw gewaad, zodat hij vooral niet op Sinterklaas of de Kerstman zou lijken. Leuk feestje? Zeker. Hij geeft cadeautjes en neemt zijn kleindochter Snegurochka mee. Dat doen ze op 31 december, dansen rond de kerstboom en luisteren naar kinderliedjes.
