Warmer weather means it's time for outdoor projects again, and I couldn't be more excited about it! Since I'm an apartment dweller, I love making projects for my parents' new home - and being that they just got their yard and patio redone, I wanted to surprise them with a pair of outdoor-friendly, wooden LED lanterns. So, I partnered with my friends at T-Rex Tape to make it happen! Did I mention I made them for under $40 for the pair (including the LED strips)? Yeah, you're not going to want to miss this one.

Unique Handmade Japanese Style lamp/Andon, The word Andon loosely translates to "paper-enclosed lantern.", were used all over Japan during the Edo period and the style of lantern with their intricate patterns are still as fashionable today as they were practical and decorative hundreds of years ago. The patterns are Kumiko (a Japanese technique of assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails). over two hundred patterns exist today many of which have links to nature and good or prosperous omens. Moving on from candles to LED lighting to illuminate them the mood and subtle lighting they radiate has a calming effect, the intricate patterns and colours of the woods used when building create a work of art and ornamental talking point in any setting when not illuminated. A lot of lamps may use hundreds of pieces of wood meticulously cut to exacting dimensions and angles “The inner pattern pieces are 9mm deep and 2.8mm thick”, so measurements have to be exact and due to this they can take many hours, even days to build each lamp depending on size and pattern. A range of woods are used depending on your choice such as Oak, Beech, Birch, Cedar, Walnut, Mahogany Obeche, Sapele and many more, some exotic colourful woods such as Padauk and Purple heart are also used to give vibrant colours to the patterns. There are hundreds of Kumiko Patterns and many size and pattern variations are available to give the lamp an individual appearance, in fact I have made many of these lamps over the years and I have never made two that are the same except for people who wanted lamps as a pair They can also be made as wall lanterns or ceiling lights. Email me with any specific requirements or questions I will be glad to help. Ged.
