Platycerium are commonly called Staghorn or Elkhorn Fern due to their weirdly wonderful, unique, antler shaped leaves. They make fascinating specimen houseplants and look particularly effective as a hanging plant once the fronds get long enough to start trailing. Platycerium bifurcatum - Common Staghorn Fern Care & Info Guide Horty Hints Enjoying a nice long soak! Water every 2-3 weeks by filling a sink or basin with 2 inches of water and sit the fern and grow pot in it for 10-20 mins. The base of the plant is covered with round to heart shaped, hard shield leaves. These shield fronds turn brown with age. This is a natural part of the plant development process and not a sign your plant is dying, they should not be removed. Leaf me alone! The antler leaves develop spores (a brown fuzz). This too is part of the natural life cycle of a Staghorn Fern and the spores should be left intact for a healthy plant. Light Platycerium bifurcatum prefers bright, indirect light. Find the brightest spot you have for the best results - however avoid exposing your plant to direct sunlight as this will scorch the plant. Watering Due to the hard shield leaves covering the root ball, it is best to water from below. Dunk in water for 10-15 mins (less in winter) and ensure there is adequate drainage. Allow the soil to begin to dry-out before watering. Don't let it stand in water continually. Temperature The Common Staghorn Fern thrives in normal household temperatures: between 16-24°C. Try to always keep your plant above 12°C at the very minimum. Avoid cold draughts. Humidity These ferns prefer higher humidity levels where possible. Mist regularly. Ideal plants for kitchens and bathrooms. Feed Liquid fertiliser can be applied occasionally during the growing season. View Plant Nutrition Height & Growth Rate The Staghon Fern is a slow-growing plant and typically reaches an ultimate height of around 0.5 to 1 metre. Please note: each plant is unique so available heights are approximate and the plant you receive may vary by ±10%. Toxicity The Staghorn Fern is considered non-toxic. Safe around children and animals. Origin Platycerium bifurcatum is native to New Guinea and Australia. Please note: images show how this plant may look at various stages of maturity. Scientific Name Platycerium bifurcatum (broad-horned plant whose leaves branch into two) Common Name Staghorn Fern, Elkhorn Fern Origin Native to Java, New Guinea and Eastern Australia Description The Staghorn Fern's distinctive fronds let it stand out in any houseplant collection. These plants, like many ferns, love moisture and humidity, and will appreciate being in a damper spot- and definitely away from radiators. The Staghorn Fern even has hairs all over its leaves which help it trap moisture; if you think your plant is dusty, it's probably actually these hairs, so don't wipe them off! Keep this plant happy and it will reward you with healthy, deep green foliage making any spot that bit brighter and greener. Light Bright but indirect light is best, especially in the warmer months when it could dehydrate your fern too much; in autumn and winter, it will benefit from an hour or so of sunlight per day. Water Staghorn ferns do not like to sit in soggy soil; they are naturally epiphytic, so their roots are used to being on the outside of a tree rather than in the ground. Make sure at least the top third dries out in between waters. It will bounce back much easier from under-watering than over-watering! Humidity Likes fairly moist air; will appreciate an occasional mist, and don't put it near a radiator. Soil A mix designed for orchids or anthuriums will serve your staghorn fern well; added bark will help its roots stay ventilated. Food Feed every six weeks with a houseplant fertiliser; don't overdo it on these delicate roots! Temperature Ideally likes temperatures of 10-26°C, but it can withstand temperatures as low as -1°C. Pet-safe Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant! Sprouts Top Tips To make sure its roots don't sit soggy, hydrate them by soaking in lukewarm water for several minutes every week or so and then gently shaking them to empty any crevices. Read more
